Who would have thought to fall in love again with my childhood sandals, the beloved/hated Birkenstocks?
Here they are in one of my “Los Angeles everyday outfit”: denim, basic bodysuit, and a jacket with loads of personality.

Another magic place in Los Angeles: Greystone Mansion.
A huge villa built in 1927 in the heart of Beverly Hills, now often used for private events. The perfect location to lose yourself, think and enjoy the view of the city of angels for hours.
And to wear for the first time the new chain booties of my shoeline, Chiara Ferragni, out in stores and online from next July (and wait until you see the photo/video campaign shot in Hollywood).

The Chunky Sweater

Back in my student days, still figuring out my style (haha! As if I’ve figured it out now…), my roommate was my best friend (yes, I’m talking about you, Anne) and we shared all our clothes.

One winter we decided we loved the big sweater look so MUCH, we both thought it was so sexy, cool, feminine, all of it, especially with our short skirts and Doc Martens, that we would only wear that aaaaall winter. No coats, just sweaters.

Who wants a coat anyway? To hell with coats.

We even did the math, broke as we were… I mean, think about it: for the price of one coat you could buy at least three giant sweaters and 12 long sleeved heattechs for the days that it got really cold.

It was perfect. It was original. It was so so sexy. And it was so us… That was great.

Three months later, we were sitting on a bench between two depressing classes at university, with out teeth chattering in the middle of a Provençal blizzard (Those of you who have been through one in Aix, you know it’s just like New York: instant cryogenics), wondering how we had been so dumb. What were we thinking with this whole sweater thing anyway? And since we’re on the subject… How do you even wash a giant wool sweater anyway? How were we supposed to dry it in our tiny little studio? Laying FLAT?! Where do you picture that happening?! Hey, what’s that super musty smell? Oh, it’s nothing. Don’t worry. It’s just my giant wool swe…

So yeah, we were pretty dumb in our sweaters, but still we thought we looked sooooo cool. Right, Anne?

All that said, my lovelies, I still adore a nice big sweater. It’s the perfect friend for autumn with a skirt, or maybe some skinny jeans, or actually, pretty much everything. It’s beautiful, cosy, sexy and I love it even more since I cut my hair.

So this year it’s coming back super strong and I invested big time (But I’ll still get a coat, and uuuh, a parka too) I bought a glorious Rick Owens one (most beautiful sweater in the world. I gotta show it to you. I can’t even begin to hold a candle to how pretty it is), Cos (BUT SERIOUSLY what’s going on with Cos?) and of course, from Equipment, who I’m pretty comfortable calling my sweater dealer at this point. I’m telling you, me and chunky sweaters, come Autumn, you just can’t tear us apart. Don’t even try. Oh, and American Apparel as well, which makes the nicest cotton sweaters you’ll ever lay your hands on. So many sweaters I don’t even know what to do with myself!

The lovely Kate in the photo got hers at Topshop. How cool is it, right?

PS: Here are some perfect fall sweaters! American Apparel, Equpiment, Theory, Acne and Topshop.

Los Angeles day 2

_MG_2450-copia

The moment of the day I enjoy the most is the late afternoon, when the sun starts to go down and you can already breath the smell of the sunset.
In Los Angeles, two days ago, I “celebrated” one of those moments wearing the new Iro sequined jacket found on My-Wardrobe with a total black look: It’s the classic “shock piece” that I couldn’t avoid taking on this trip with me and that I can’t wait to experiment at night time as well in hundreds of different combinations.
P.S: Just to keep you updated on my moves.. On Tuesday night I got my 6th and now favourite tattoo,on Wednesday I went for the first time to New Orleans (I only took Instagram photos), and from yesterday I’m in Dallas for work before leaving for Cabo.. My new hashtag is #lifetravelling and I just enjoy it so much!

NYC. My super talented friend Zanita snapped these pictures of me during the snowstorm that hit New York a couple of weeks ago and I absolutely love the moody light in them! Even though the city looks quite peaceful in these pictures I can assure you that was definitely not the case, and I’m pretty sure I was actually hoovering above the ground due to the strong winds at one point when we shot these photos. But you know what they say, no pain no gain, and I really love how the pictures turned out!

Coats !

I’m crazy about coats.
During a recent interview I did about my style*, they asked me what I bought the most of.
Mmmmmm… It’s not shoes, not bags, nope. It’s coats. Whenever I see a beautiful coat, I just can’t resist. There’s something in me that says, YES! Go for it!

As soon as it gets a little cold outside, it’s really the piece that brings everything together. Sorry shoes.

I’ve got fifteen** of them at least and that’s not counting all the cool coats I steal from Scott, like his Barbours. This year, I got a giant Stella McCartney coat on sale (you can see it here) but then also wondered if this Isabel Marant jacket is a must or if I can live without it. For the moment, I decided to live without it, but… Well, it’s just the beginning of winter..

What are you wearing this winter?

On the picture, You can see my friend Giorgia in the sublime New York autumn light wearing a coat she designed herself (she just started her own brand called Rêve) that would be a perfect addition to my collection. She’s wearing vintage leather pants, a Céline bag, an American Apparel sweater and Zara heels.

——-

* I always think it’s weird to answer questions about my style. When is the time you start thinking, “yeaaaah, I’ve got a style, go ahead and bring on the questions!”

** They never really go out of style. You can wear them for years!

Show your potential

TheBlondeSalad-52004-copia

It's always strange to think how a small, apparently harmless, decision can totally change your life. This is one of those thoughts which always come to my mind every morning while opening my macbook and browsing through comments, emails and new posts of my blog.
American Express contacted me some weeks ago, asking me If I wanted to share my experience as a "potentialist". What does this mean? Potentialists are those people who made a change in their lives, or those who made their hobbies and passions become their job, concept which is connected with American Express claim "Show your potential".
How did I become a "potentialist"? It was a mix between initiative, right time, will to express myself and luck, which is always an important part.
It all started on 12th October 2009, with this simple post: after spending a couple of years on Flickr I felt the need to open a web space which was totally mine, The Blonde Salad.
I would have never thought this blog could give me this much and that It could become a real job, but indeed It is.
In Italy there were only a few personal style blogs before mine and the fact I was one of the first ones to start one naturally helped me getting noticed in a short time. After 4 months since I opened the blog (which already was updated almost everyday) the first job proposal arrived, from Benetton.
Then It was the time of the press boom: during February 2010 Milan fashionweek everybody was talking about the fashion blogger phenomenon, which was unknown in Italy until then. There were articles about fashion bloggers and about my blog on all the national newspapers, I was interviewed for the Italian news and I was a guest with Mischa Barton at Chiambretti Night. Just after that another important proposal arrived, from the italian weekly magazine A, in which I still write in the fashion section.
Visits on my blog immediately reached 30 000 a day from the previous 15 000 a day and then kept growing: now The Blonde Salad collects around 110 000 visits each day, for a total of 8.5 million pageviews each month and around 730 000 unique visitors each month from 180 different countries.
From March 2010 the big interest towards fashion bloggers started also in Italy: I got offered a lot of different jobs, but I declined most of them because they were not the right ones for me. At the beginning deciding was so difficult: the first times you are offered a lot of money saying no is really hard, but I've always thought the best idea was to only do what I felt like the right thing for me. I've always chosen collaborations with brands I love and that I find similar to my taste: I would never wear something I don't like on the blog. All my collaborations and jobs are declared: the blog became in these years a real job for me, and I've never hidden it to my followers, It's one of my biggest satisfactions.
From April/March 2010 I started working on one of my biggest adventures since I opened the blog: my personal shoeline, Chiara Ferragni, entirely Made In Italy: the first collection came out in September 2010 and now the 4th collection is in about 70 stores around Europe, and the line grows every season.
From that moment so many collaborations, projects and travels arrived: I always try to keep an updated list of my experiences in the ABOUT section of the blog.
In 2011 TBS crew, The Blonde Salad team, was born: Richi, Claire, Angelo and Tommy work with me as a team. I'm the only editor of the blog and I'm the only one using all the social networks, but I could never do all these things I do If It wasn't for them :)
Everyday I'm grateful to my followers for everything that happened to me in these 2.5 years: It's unbelievable to think how my life could be now if, that 12th October 2009, I didn't decide to start this adventure, and If I didn't believe It all could be possible.
I thought about some short life tips that I learnt from beautiful people and from important experiences in these years, hoping that they might help you as well in your everyday life.

1. Listen to your heart to find your real hobbies and dreams
2. Work hard to make them happen

I've always been interested in fashion, passion I Inherited from my mum, but I never thought It could become my job. When I had to choose about my future and about my university decision I opted for international law (that I hope to finish soon, I have my last and horrible exams to try) instead of thinking about something which had more in common with my passions. I anyway tried to grow my interests in fashion in these years, trying to express myself as much as I could: the web has always been the right place for me.
I remember when I used to receive the first negative comments on my Flickr profile, where lot of people were writing me "what do you think you're doing taking photos at your outfits?". Now, after all these experiences, I understood what I was thinking to do shooting my looks and sharing them :)
Follow your instinct.

3. Give the best in everything
4. Don't be afraid to make mistakes

Everything you do, try to do it as best as you can. We all make mistakes, and I can't even count how many I make everyday: don't let the fear of failure prevent you from realizing a dream. Keep in count hundreds of mistake, and be sure you'll need them as well.

TheBlondeSalad-51981-copia

5. Keep a positive attitude
6. Never stop learning

I noticed something: every time I'm nervous or angry about something I don't handle the situations at my best. In the days in which I'm in a positive attitude everything seems better. Positive vibes don't only influence us, but also influence all the people around us.
Each of us has something to teach: in these past years I understood I can learn at least one new thing everyday, simply listening everything that surrounds me.

5. Mantenete un atteggiamento positivo

TheBlondeSalad-51983-copia

7. Let your friends help you
8. Always believe in yourself

Friends, family and your partner can help you in those moments in which you need support or in which you have to make a tough decision. Don't do everything by yourself, listen to the advice of people who only want the best for you.
Always believe in yourself, don't let anyone put you down: we only have one life and It's too short to be influenced by other people.

7. Fatevi aiutare dai vostri amici
8. Credete sempre in voi stessi

Smile, smile and smile to everyone!

A smile is priceless and is contagious: try to smile to everyone for a day and tell me If you don't feel better.

Sorridete, sorridete e sorridete a tutti!

My Essentials / Solange

solange-knowles-fashion

Here are the essentials of my favorite DJ, Solange!

My Top: A silk white blouse.
It is for sure my most frequent purchase.
I have them in several different cuts and wear them with everything.
You know the famous scene in Forest Gump, where he names all of the different ways Bubba Gump can prepare shrimp?
I feel the same ways about all the different styles I can name of white silk blouse’s.
A sleeveless, a short sleeved, a quarter sleeved, a long sleeved, a spaghetti strap, a silk chiffon, a silk satin, oh the list can go on. I think they are so easy, simple, and comfortable.
My favorite is a sleeveless v-neck by Vince.

My Bottom: A printed pant.
I missed out on pants for way too many years of my life.
I was an avid skirt wearer from ages 13-22.
As a young girl, I made the common mistake of defining classic girly-ness and sexiness by showing my legs.
Since I found the right pants 3 years ago, it’s been hard to keep me out of them.
Opening Ceremony, DFV and Marni all make great ones in wonderful prints.

My Jeans: It is a rare occurrence that I wear jeans…but if I do denim, oversized vintage Levis.

My Evening: A simple silhouette dress in an amazing print or striking bright color.
Yellow and fuchsia tones are my favorite to wear.
I also love a nice clean white.
I’m extremely experimental with prints and colors, which I think draw me to a more minimalist design in terms of silhouettes and proportions.

My Intimates: Easy and comfortable American Apparel Tri-Blend Halter Romper in Gray.

My Coat: Anything in leopard. Somehow it just always seems to work with everything in my closet.
This past Fall/Winter I lived in my Malene Birger one.

My Bag: I have to admit, I’m not a big bag girl at all.
Maybe its because I don’t carry a lot of stuff, so the idea of buying this source to hold just my phone, keys, and wallet just doesn’t grab me.
It could also be that every time I see a bag I like, I see a shoe I like…and the shoe purchase wins over the bag one in my budget.
I do love a really funky clutch though, and often wear them during the day.

My Shoes: There’s not really any consistent measure of what I love in a shoe.
I really, truly, simply, just love shoes in general.
A beautiful designed shoe instantly sends my endorphins into overload.
The older my son gets, and his daily activities become a part of my life…the more I crave comfort.
These days it’s essential to have a sensible heel.
It would be absolutely a disservice to name one designer, as my closet really houses everything from Alaïa to Nine West.

My Accessories: Rings! Lia Sophia and Lorraine Schwartz are my faves. I love to stack them and pile as many of them as I possibly can.
I also live by my Aldo packs of simple studs. I go through about a pack every two months.

My Watch: I have never owned one.

My Glasses: I love Illsteva sunglasses. Super great shapes that frame my honker quite nicely:)

My Scent: Good ole deodorant and my hair butters and oils…See next question.

My Hair: Carols Daughter Monoi oil shampoo and conditioner.
I also use raw shea butter every day and pure Argon oil when its really dry (so pure, it makes me smell like a basket of nuts).
Once a week I set up a time where I wash and deep condition and very carefully comb out my hair, always starting with the ends first.
Yesterday was that day, and so I literally popped in a dvd (My Week With Marilyn to be exact)…sectioned off my hair with clips, and combed.
I usually sit under a heat cap to penetrate the conditioner and when it’s all clean and rinsed, I twist it with two strands of hair into twists.
When I take them out, I shower again …not getting the hair wet, but letting the steam frizz my hair up a bit more.
Occasionally when I am tired of this lengthy regimen , I get braids or wear extensions in the same texture as my own hair to give myself a break.

My Lip: Bright orange, orange red, or hot pink lipstick. It’s one of the few things that feels very essential to my beauty style.

My Skin: Epicurean skin products and Neutrogina daily moisturizer with SPF 30.

My Inspiration: My daily walks of life. I see inspiration in all alleys of my journey. The potato man my son made two nights ago, the super posh women I met in Moscow the other night, the street characters on Hollywood Blvd…. When it comes to what inspires me, God has created such a beautiful playground to explore and I want to see and breath every corner I can…

LOOK OF THE DAY "RETRO"

I have moved on to Bogota in Colombia and I have to say, I am completely blown away with how beautiful it is!. We are only shooting 2 episodes for the series here so we are pretty much going against the clock before moving on to film 6 episodes in Mexico. I wish I had more time to discover the city so I will try to take advantage of the 6 days I have left.
I havent been around the whole city yet but one of my favorite spots so far is a neighborhood called "La Candelaria" which is the "old Bogota" and is full of amazingly beautiful and picturesque houses painted in different colors with cobble stone streets which reminds me SO MUCH to the little towns we have in Mexico, I was blown away...I havent been able to take any pictures yet because it has been raining a a lot since I arrived so I leave you with some photos I shot in Buenos Aires before leaving.

Shirt: H&M Trend / Shorts: American apparel / Shoes: ZARA / Earrings and camera: Bought in the San Telmo market in Buenos Aires

Dubay day 2

TheBlondeSalad-16587-copia

Second day in Dubai: we started with a walk on Jumeraih Beach Road, stopping at the famous vintage store "Bambah Boutique", in the same building of the design concept store "The Zoo", where I found my beloved friendship bracelets in fluo colours.
We then went again to Dubai Mall, invited to have a look at the wonderful S*uce store (that I'm gonna show you in next post in the afternoon), in which I found some cool unique pieces (one of them is the maxi necklace I was wearing in the Burj Khalifa photos). Since I'm a huge fan of high skyscrapers I couldn't avoid visiting the Burj Khalifa: only problem? Tickets are usually sold one month in advance, especially in holiday time. Thanks to a sweet follower of the blog from Dubai, Hamda, everything was resolved: since she's a resident of the Burj Khalifa she invited us to visit the skyscraper, taking us in all the private parts of the building (40th floor swimming pool=paradise), and then taking us to the 123rd floor (around 500 m high), from where we enjoyed the Dubai Mall fountains show. My followers are always the best :)
I was wearing Prada wedges, Asos neon jeans, Rada necklace, Proenza Schouler bag and Etrusca ring
P.S: Happy 19th birthday to my wonderful sister Valentina!
