Simplicity

Lately, I’ve been trying to simplify my life. I want simplicity in everything. Like, even Homeland annoys me because it’s too complicated.

Everyday life, beauty, clothes. I really don’t feel like worrying about any of it. I’m leaving today for three days in Miami, and my ultimate goal would be to fit all three days into my handbag (except that since I’ve simplified everything, my bag is tiny) (ok, maybe just fit all three days in my carry on) (ok fine, in my big suitcase, then — I guess I still have a lot to learn about living simply).

(And plus, if I only had three items of clothing, this would be a pretty boring fashion blog, right?)(Even if honestly — what’s all the rage right now to say you want to have less, which is proof that this post is not at all anti-fashion.)

This process has been in the works for awhile now — I told you about downsizing my wardrobe, remember? Well I enjoyed that so much that now it’s taking over my whole life.

My bag.

I only carry one bag now. It’s my favorite one — my Lulu bag by Saint Laurent, and I always have it with me. I don’t care about the others, this one is enough for me. It’s sublime, it goes with everything, and it’s not too recognizable, which I love.

You can’t fit much in it. So that forced me to rethink my wallet. I was tired of having a huge thing in my purse full of receipts and useless stuff. I figure if guys (guys are like old people — they’re right about a lot of things!!!)(oh there, I should write a post about that next time) can go out without a handbag, I should be able to go out without a wallet the size of Kanye’s Hummer.

So I got rid of everything and bought a tiny Comme des Garçons wallet which totally fits my needs. And my goal is to manage to make it work with nothing but a Smythson card holder in the near future — that’s how liberated I’ll be from all these base earthly concerns.

So now all I take with me every day is my phone, my wallet, my headphones, my keys, and a lip gloss. And honestly, I don’t miss any of the other stuff. Well, except for chewing gum, maybe. And blotting papers. And my compact. And hand cream. And a scarf.

Beauty.

Ok, we’re not going to talk about my haircut again, I think you’ve understood by now — it’s really super easy, and plus, the more Clyde, my hair stylist, gets to know me, the faster and more beautiful it is every time, and we don’t even have to talk to understand each other anymore.

As for makeup, I asked Tatyana, my favorite makeup artist (who told me “You really don’t know how to put on makeup” the first time I met her! And like any good French girl, I love when people tell it to me straight, even more when it’s at first encounter) to do two looks for me. One for night time, one for day time. We picked out my colors together, and I got rid of everything else — all the old tubes and tubs that were just collecting dust. I’ll show you what we picked out soon if you want!!!

Clothes.

I’ve already talked to you about this, so I won’t go on and on, but this is another area of my life where I keep simplifying. I just bought five Uniqlo sweaters. Cashmere, v-neck, neutral colors. They go with everything and even if it’s not quite a Bompard (do you know where I can find Bompard sweaters in New York?) it honestly makes my life so much easier.

Those, and a few pairs of well-cut jeans — that’s my base. Then I add either jewelry, a pretty coat, or a killer pair of shoes, and that does it for me. I’m still on the lookout for my killer pair of shoes for this winter, by the way…

Normcore.

Hey, I didn’t say I was Normcore. I like beautiful things and I think too many basics kill the basic.
And vintage 501′s scare me. They’re really not for everyone.

Food.

I make single-ingredient meals. Like yesterday, I wanted to make ratatouille, and then I ended up just cooking zucchini. The ingredients? Zucchini. Nope, I didn’t even add onions — it gives them a weird taste. It’s super tasty, takes only 5 minutes to prepare (it’s all in the provençal style cooking — a little olive oil, salt and pepper, and then you have to burn them just a little) and frankly, for someone who lives in New York and spends their life in restaurants, it gives your palate a nice break.
And it’s healthy!

So I make myself little dishes with three ingredients max. I love it.
Squash soup. Avocado toast. Steamed leeks. Dark chocolate. Sardines. Cheese for dinner. A glass of red wine. Ah the good life!!!

Traveling.

Not too far. Not too complicated. For New Year’s, I’ll be on a beach in Costa Rica. The goal? To try To surf, eat ceviche, and drink margaritas with friends. That’s it.
Hey, speaking of food and Costa Rica, hahaha. Bathing suit anxiety right after Christmas.

Exercise (aka: bathing suit anxiety right after Christmas)

After pretty much quitting yoga since it was kind of messing up my back (it’s a little depressing, given my incredible talent for it, I don’t know why, but yoga just hurts my back) I decided to start exercising again, but without setting stupid goals that I’ll give up on after half an hour.

So now I work on my abs and butt at home, and I walk at least an hour per day (to get to the Studio, for example)(I have a pretty good app for that — it’s called Moves*) or I’ll run for half an hour if I know I won’t have time to walk. That plus push-ups to get me ready for surfing (I’m at 12 now — in your opinion, how many do I need to do? 100? 88 more to go!!! Yay!!!) And when I have time, I’ll do yoga or pilates or a dance class with a friend. Just for fun.

Voilà. Simple, right?

What about you? Are you super trendy like me or are you still accumulating a bunch of stuff? (That’s so 2011 — seriously, pull yourself together!)

———————-
*Moves, is like an improved pedometer that counts your steps.
The only problem with Moves is when there’s a glitch. Yesterday I walked like a crazy person to beat my record and suddenly the app froze, and I lost everything I’d done and felt like I’d walked for nothing, which is ridiculous and just goes to show how addicted we can get to these things!!!

Valise d’été

Here are a few of my favorite things I took with me for the summer…

—-

Of course, there is always a lot of white, like this super cool shirt and my Common Projects sneakers and jean shorts that are perfect for throwing on for some paddle ball. But hey, it’s Greece and I needed to add a little bit of color to my wardrobe for this trip, so I went with this pink Isabel skirt and this orange one-piece from Eres.

A simple tote, embroidered pareo, my gold Sonia Rykiel belt that I’ve had forever, those beautiful coral earrings from Aurélie and a travel watercolor set in case I feel inspired! It’s so cool to be able to bring my stationery with me too, I really love it.

Ok, so maybe my suitcase wasn’t really 22.3 kilos by the time I added some of the items not pictured…but these are my favorites that I wanted to share with you!

Bite Size

We get it. It’s summer. And if you are anything like us here at the Studio, you want to carry that super mini bag you bought a month ago but you can’t fit your giant checkbook/receipt/phone numbers on napkins filled wallet inside (time to start mobile banking y’all). It’s a little easier to master the art of downsizing your bag contents when you start with minimizing your wallet size (this also maybeeee means you might be able to keep an extra tube of lipstick in there).

We searched high and low to find the miniest (new word, you heard it first) wallets to fit inside your tiniest bags and clutches this summer!

These are our favorites….

Comme des Garcons Mini Wallets

Comme des Garçons: The total it wallet. You might end up taking it out of your bag more often then you planned on…

Vianel Mini Wallets

Vianel: A new classic. The style is simple and sweet– you’ll put it in your non-mini bag too.

Valextra Mini Wallets

Valextra: You don’t even need the mini bag to carry this one around. And that little strap means you’ll probably never lose it either…

PS: The wallet in the pocket is from Everlane!

I received this uh-maze-n leather ‘tarzan’ crop from Friend of Mine last year (but in the dead of winter) so it got no wear until just a few days ago. The fit is perfect and the back–best part in my opinion. It’s a single piece that looks like a bib when laid flat, but on! So good. Make sure to check out the rest of this Aussie brand, one of my all-time faves for easy, modern pieces. Skip through to find out where the shorts + shoes are from.

As some of you pointed out on Instagram, yes, there is a white tuck in the back, but this is intentional. Comme pieces always have a strange fold or pin on the garment that is counter-intuitive (by conventional standards), but really is just a deconstruction, re-interpretation of a classic cut. Hence my love for Rei. These shorts I feel I will own forever–that’s why I never fail to see the value in investing in this brand.

New Kicks

CDG for Converse!

When I saw these heart patterned sneakers in the Comme Des Garçons shop in Paris last year I REALLY wanted them. Then, as I have a tendency to do, I completely forgot…until last weekend when I found myself in Chelsea across from the store… and voila! I bought them and I love them just as much now as I did then.

They’re pretty foot friendly, no?

Perfumes

I’ll always remember when CK One first came out.

Oh boy. We weren’t super familiar with the brand in France but the ads were so amazing with all those intriguing yet rebellious New Yorkers. It was so far from the classic “sexy woman making love to a bottle of perfume” cliché that I was struck by a lightning of coolitude.

On top of that, it was a unisex scent, a totally new concept which for a tomboy teen on a quest to find her true fashion identity, it couldn’t have been more perfect. This scent was me!

All that to say that for what it’s worth, CK One could have smelled like gasoline I’d still would’ve bought it and worn it. What I wanted was just to be part of the CK One world.

It also happened that it worked way better with my teenage budget (=0 dollars) than a trip from Ajaccio to New York, and on top of that it was sold in every perfume shop right near my house at a time when in Corsica, my island, if you wanted to wear a pair of Converse, you had to import them yourself back from “the continent”.

So like, boom. Instant gratification.

The same romantic story lines happened with other perfumes at other times of my teenage life (ok, and beyond).

There was Jean-Paul Gaultier (I am fashion. I am different.), L’eau d’Issey Miyake (I am pure. I am evanescent), Obsession (I’m a woman. I like to hang out nude on an old couch)(also, I’m Kate Moss), Acqua di Gio (I love rolling around in the sand? I don’t really know)…

But after I while, it started getting old.

The first thing that bothered me were the scents.

More and more, I realized many of these fragrances all pretty much smelled the same. They all had a very particular and inexplicable note in them.

Which is actually true.

Most of these fragrances start with a base of calone or white musk, two synthetic scents used all the time in the perfume world.

I started incriminating any fragrance using synthetic ingredients – but the truth is that it’s a stupid reaction. Almost every fragrance out there – even the most classic, like Chanel N°5 contains synthetic scents. And if used well, synthetic ingredients can be the base of some marvelous perfumes.

The thing that bothered me though was the lack of originality – or better yet, the way perfumers all followed the same trends in order to avoid taking risks.

And then I became more and more irritated by all the “big launches.” Instead of continuing and deepening the story and relationship with existing perfumes, dozens of new fragrances were created each season (I’ve heard that four new perfumes come out each day), each with it’s own celebrity for good press coverage – you know the story : “[Insert the name of celebrity here], what perfume are you wearing?” “I’ve got on [Insert name of perfume] morning and night! It really speaks to me as a free, modern, and [Insert whatever adjective you want: active / passionate / sexy / artistic / adventurous] woman. I love it!”

The more I saw, the less interested I became.

Same thing with bottles, I got a little tired. I’m such a packaging junkie but a bad bottle can turn me off from a good perfume. And there are a lot of terrible bottles out there (Well ok, maybe I should add that my type of bottle is the super classic, Chanel N°5 type of bottle, so it doesn’t leave a lot of room for crazy bottles).

Of course, there are still a lot of big brand perfumes that are absolutely sublime.

But me, I was a little tired of it.

That’s when one of my life’s true loves came onto the scene, the fragrance from Comme des Garçons. It’s fantastic from every point of view: scent, bottle, and storytelling. It was also the first of the Comme des Garçons parfums which are a true revolution in the world of perfume.

Then a few years passed and I felt like a change. That’s when I discovered another one of my favorites… Acqua di Cuba by Santa Maria Novella, in Florence. I love the perfume, of course, but I was also into the whole world of the brand and “only for the initiated” (yeah, you’re right… snob) thing it had going for it.

This is the same time that I started trying out new brands of perfumes, alternatives to the giants of beauty. I looked for ones that understood that perfume is an intimate and sensual affair.

Take Byredo for example… I was in their boutique in Stockholm on Saturday. Their brand has such an inspiring identity, simple and beautiful packaging, and beautiful, sophisticated fragrances.

What’s funny though is that even though I’m a huge fan of their brand and the biggest packaging junkie you’ll find, I’ve never succeeded in making one of their perfumes my own, despite all my efforts (because really, who wouldn’t want to wear a Byredo scent? They’re so über chic (just like us, right?)! They’re created by a super cool guy too (cool like us, right?), and the perfumes have names like Gypsy Water (just like us, full of gypsitude cool, right?).

But I guess that even with my completely superficial approach to perfume, I can’t be satisfied just buying from a brand as awesome as Byredo. Byredo, can’t wait for you to come up with my ideal perfume.

And then the other day at Catbird, totally randomly, I fell all over myself for my latest scent, Poppy Rouge by D.S. & Durga.

I love the smell and that’s after buying it that I realized that I didn’t know a thing about the brand – and that the bottle, even though pretty cute (it’s the one in photo) didn’t really give my a packaging orgasm. Not even the name either. Poppy Rouge is no Gypsy Water. And that actually, the only thing I was interested in was the scent itself.

No need for a story around it, or celebrity or even initiated only story around it.

So, I asked myself :

1/ Did I finally find my personality ?

2/ Have we actually all been through the same thing?

After hours of advanced research (5mn on Google) it seems like I’m not the only one looking for something more authentic (shit, I just thought I had found my personality!)…

We’re all getting a little exhausted by perfume marketing and have stopped paying attention to it (wait, did you know that Paris Hilton has launched 14 perfumes since 2004?)(How could be miss that!!!?) and go back to classics or smaller brands. We don’t want to smell the same thing as our neighbor or anything super recognizable (Angel from Thierry Mugler anyone?) but prefer something that feels really intimate and personal.

Did you feel that shift? Did you change perfumes? Did you find your personality ^^? Or are you still excited by big perfume launches?

———

* What I didn’t know at the time was how inspired they’d been by Andy Warhol’s Factory photos , ooooh even cooolllleer!!!

** After looking, it seems that all Durga scents are created in house, in small batches with premium sourced raw materials, and made in Brooklyn. Woooaaaa, natural AND hipstery without even thinking of it!! (All right, easy if you go to Catbird – they know what they’re doing).

Bianco e nero: un classico con cui, a mio parere, non si sbaglia mai. E i tronchetti di Alexander Wang non hanno la perfetta silhouette?
Buona pasqua a tutti voi!

Marc Jacobs

marcc-jacobs-1

You should have seen my face when I saw the first looks at Marc Jacobs. What is it? The shoes, the silhouettes, the hats, the colors?!

Of course, there’s the stage, which was made of laser-cut paper. Of course there’s the audience, completely captivated. Of course, this is Marc. So I looked a second time. Around me, everyone’s saying “Very Comme des Garçons !” “It’s horrible!” “I love it!”…

Then after a few minutes, it’s over, and already everyone is talking about it. Then it’s the evening, and everyone is talking about it. Then I have coffee this morning with Scott, and again, we’re talking about the Marc Jacobs show. I love trying to figure out what I felt while I watched the show.

For years I’ve been going to the shows and asking myself what I’m going to be able to wear next season. Today, I feel a bit of a change in myself. I think I finally began to look beyond what I “like” or “don’t like.”

Thanks to designers like Jacobs and Prada, who push my sense of taste and style, my point of view on fashion is changing…

Ok. Just decided I’m going on a hike.

liu-wen-shoes-en

So tell me, what would you think if I told you I loved these shoes?

And what if I told you when I saw Liu Wen (so pretty, so stylish, me such a fan) backstage at the Altuzarra show last season, I followed her for 10 minutes just to get a photo of her shoes – and she didn’t even see me, that’s how sneaky I am, even I was half lying on the floor to get a shot of the POLKA DOTS on her shoes (who makes those? Comme Des Garçons, I’m guessing?)

And what if I told you that seriously, I made Scott embark on a hiking adventure (I’ll tell you all about that later and we’ll have a good laugh) for nothing more than to have the pleasure of buying some cool hiking boots?

I’ll just go ahead and give you the answer:

It’s just that my outdoorsiness and my love of nature are trying suuuuuper hard to break down the walls of my superficiality.

And with that, I’m off to let you reflect on my philosophy du jour. Big hugs!

Holiday Gift Guide 2011: Wallets

To me, a wallet is a nearly perfect gift. They come in a million shapes and sizes, chic ones can be had at nearly any price point, and most people don’t think about buying them for themselves. Almost all of us are in a constant state of “needing a new wallet,” and even if you don’t right now, it’s an easy gift to store for use at a later date. (Or, if necessary, to regift. It happens. No judgement.)

With that in mind, wallets are an obvious choice for the latest installment of our Holiday Gift Guide 2011. From $15 to nearly a grand, we’d like to think that we have all budgets and most personal styles covered. Have a mother, daughter or sister who has everything but still needs a Christmas gift? This is where you start.

Let’s start with the Mulberry Postman Wallet – it’s in the middle of our price range and has a pocket or slot for every card, coin, receipt and stray dollar bill you could carry. Mulberry makes it in a variety of colors, but for my money, I want something bright and punchy like kelly green. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $450.

Ok, ok, not everyone likes a bill-sized wallet! If you need something more compact, a French purse is the way to go, and we like the organization and clean exterior of the Comme des Garcons Embossed French Wallet quite a it. Note: The purple wallet is also purple on the inside, I just couldn’t find a picture of it. Buy through Nordstrom for $250.

Want something in between the two traditional wallet sizes? And also want something that’s a little furry? The Alexander Wang Prisma Biker Wallet is for you. Buy through ShopBop for $325.

If you want someone (me) to love you forever, get her (me) the Alaia Laser Cutout Wallet, even if the light leather exterior is wildly impractical. (IT’S AN ALAIA.) Buy through Net-a-Porter for $800.

The Botkier Evans Continental Wallet is easily my pick of the group. Not only is it generously sized and full of all the necessary compartments, but the red rubberized leather exterior is just about the coolest leather treatment that I’ve ever seen in person. The dual-tone hardware doesn’t hurt either, plus it won’t empty your existing wallet. Buy through ShopBop for $195.

Madewell has proven itself a repository of many affordable neo-vintage treasures, and the Madewell Weathered Wallet is yet another. I could see the closure wearing out after a year or two, but by then, you’ll have gotten more than your money’s worth out of it. Buy through Madewell for $68.

The ModCloth Money Spocks Wallet is a bit of a departure for us, but I can’t help but like the blue-and-white artistic rendering of the “plans” for Stark Trek‘s USS Enterprise. I’m not even a sci-fi fan! Buy through ModClock for $14.99.

If you need your wallet to be a take-anywhere workhorse, it’s difficult to beat Louis Vuitton’s dark Damier Ebene Canvas for a material that simply cannot be ruined. The Louis Vuitton Zippy Wallet, with its all-around zipper and tough exterior, is practically a wallet fortress. Buy through Louis Vuitton for $830.

On the other hand, maybe you want something small and sleek to fit in your smaller bags and clutches. The Reed Krakoff Card Case has slots for your ID and a few credit cards, plus an opening at the top so you can tuck your drink money inside. What’s more festive than shiny gold patent leather? Buy through Net-a-Porter for $130.

Hola Barcelona

TheBlondeSalad-7596-copia

I arrived yesterday morning in a rainy, but still magical, Barcelona. I'm gonna be here only for three days, all dedicated to a future project about WERELSE and It's really hard to find the time to go around, look for new places, restaurants and stores, despite my last stay here last March in which I could discover this wonderful city. This is the look I wore yesterday: leather jacket found in Tokyo, militar green jeans, new Proenza and the black sneakers from my shoe line, Chiara Ferragni. Do you prefer to see me wearing high heels or more casual looks like in this case? For me it all depends on the way I wake up in the morning :)
P.S: How cool is the Hermes window with the graffiti carré? I would have never expected something like this!

Assolutamente inaspettato!

Here in Tokyo it's already morning, so here for you all the other photos shot on Sunday with all the guys around this incredible city. Carolina and I decided to go for Shu Uemura fake eyelashes, which soon revealed to be heavier than I thought but absolutely scenographic. For the typical dinner+karaoke night I changed jacket, wearing a new purchase from Ragtaf: a white leather jacket by Comme Des Garçons. Good night Europe and America, good morning Asia!
