We talked last time about style and personality… I’ve been looking for mine (style AND personality) for a long time now.

Well. There have been a few moments slightly more memorable than others:

1/ I am 8 years old and in love with my papa.

Just to have the privilege of spending as much time with him as possible, I become interested in everything he does. I even dress like him.
I’m also the biggest fan, since I was a kid, of George, the heroine from The Famous Five.

My look? Pants and short hair. I am a real tomboy in school and the little model girls (the perfectas of the time) look at me with a raised brow.

2/ I am 13 and in love with Marcel.

Marcel is the most handsome skater in middle school. He has no idea I exist.
Seeing that I don’t think of myself as someone with a personnality, I tell myself that the best thing to get noticed by him is:

a/ Copy his style. Baggy jeans. Baggy t-shirts. Chuck Taylors.

Result: Nothin’. Still has no clue of my existence.

b/ Refine my analysis. I observe that all of Marcel’s skater friends have super feminine girlfriends. I kick myself for being so stupid when I was younger (=2 days earlier). Of course, guys prefer real girls!!!

Shift in strategy. I become super girly.

Result: Nothin’. Still doesn’t know I exist.

I conclude that it isn’t with style that you win male affection. The day I figured that out, I met my first love. No, not Marcel. Marcel, to this day, still doesn’t know I exist.

3/ I am 15 and in love with Rei Kawakubo.

Whom I encounter in The Face, my new bible. Seeing that I have no clothing budget, I go on secret missions into my mother’s wardrobe.

I grab some of her most beautiful outfits (Alaïa? Mugler?) and with the help of a big pair of scissors, I turn them into Comme Des Garçons.

In Ajaccio, where I am living, no one understands my look except for me. Teenage Angst and despair. No one understands me ! And my mother even less, who flat out fainted the day she discovered my wrongdoings. Outraged by her lack of creativity, I bark at her that one day, Rei Kawakubo will adopt me and that way, everybody will be happy.

4/ I am 17 and in love with my best friend.

Our style? Agnès B skinny jeans, big sweater, Doc Martens. Always the same, always matching, every day, all the time. Our dresser? Shared. Our friends? Shared. Our favorite movies? shared (Rocky Horror Picture Show). Our personality? Wait, what did you say ? Our what?

5/ I am 21 years old and in love with Björk.

My look: Hiking shoes like Björk, mini-skirt like Björk, hair in a multi-bun like Björk, and military parka because not like Björk : I didn’t have the budget to shop at Hussein Chalayan.

One day, on a whim, just to see what it would be like, I shaved my head. Because I’m soooo woooooh! Rrrrrrrsgsgsg (guttural noises like Björk)!!! Crazy! Like Britney Björk.

6/ I am 24 and in love with a rocker.

Skinny jeans (you can’t find them back then, takes forever in vintage shops, but, hey, between two rock concerts, I have aaaaaaall the time in the world) pointy ballet flats (you can’t find them back then, takes forever in vintage shops, but, hey, between two rock concerts, I have aaaaaaall the time in the world) vintage fur (So easy to find, pfffff, annoying), cigarette in one hand, beer in the other, backstage pass around my neck.

A few years later, I realize I don’t like beer and you can see the concert better if you’re in the audience. It’s not like the venue is packed, anyway…

7/ I am 26 and in love with Zara.

Went well with my budget as a newbie to the workforce. In the span of a couple months, my wardrobe consists of 80% Zara. Zara becomes my religion, and just like mass, I make sure to go once a week and soon I have no idea how I ever got dressed in the morning before Zara.

Result: Same look as all my friends. No wait… Same look as my entire city ! No. Same look as all of France!!! No, same look as the entire world!

8/ I am 27 and I am broke.

I quit my job to work as a freelance illustrator. Bohemian life here we come! Even H&M is considered luxury, it’s the rock bottom of shopping. It’s the fashion juice cleanse. The only thing I can’t stop buying is magazines. Ahhh ! Land of dreams !

9/ I am 30, I am an illustrator and I have a blog!!!

Fashion blogs were born in France at the same time fashion mass market explodes. Zara, TopShop, H&M, it’s also the start of collaborations with designers (The War For a Jacket by Karl Lagerfeeeeeeld!!!!)… We are all overshopping.

And I am starting to make a living on my illustrations, and so after the fashion juice cleanse, it’s a total relapse: Instead of staying calm and buying just a few good pieces, I ruin myself with “good fashion deals” and stupid private sales.

It’s the worst period for me in terms of style. I am not dressing for me. Not even for a guy or my best friend but just to try to be fashionable.

Like for example, when Phoebe Philo was with Chloé. You remember those baby doll dresses? Can you imagine me in a pseudo Chloé baby doll dress? No? Me neither.

But I did it. Really guys, it was the dark ages.

10/ I Don’t Have Enough Perspective To Comment On The Years That Follow But:

My style found its footing again and went back to fundamentals: man’s closet and short skirts, among some others. I still have moments where I panic and suddenly try to become as sexy-cool as Emmanuelle Alt or as sexy-chic as Carine Roitfeld but moments like those usually don’t last a long time.

I’ve come to realize that no matter what I do, I can’t help but be me.

I still have a lot of things to learn in terms of evening dressing. Sometimes I panic when the runway shows come about. Stupid purchases, losing my head at the last minute, hysterical behavior right before heading out the door, and sometimes, a completely stupid outfit that gives me the desire to just die right then and there, as I always realize just how horrible the look is after it’s way too late to change it.

But I’m sure we’ve all been there.

Even Carine Roitfeld.

We forget quickly. What we remember are the moments when people look the most beautiful and feel most at home in their own skin. That’s what sticks with us, what we hold dear and what is most important, don’t you think?

Chinese are no fans of vintage/second hand items or dead person’s belongings as Hong Kongers would like to call them, believing pre-owned goods from the dead will bring bad luck and possess by spirits.  I contradict the fact that I, a keen collector of vintage objects and clothing for nearly 10 years, not a single banshee nor stroke of bad luck affect me with negative energy, at least I have treated the treasures with love and respect.  My bedroom is a dumping ground for all sorts of junk.

I met Andy Chow at an event last year, Andy is an Architecture designer and founder of Standard Vintage an online vintage boutique that curates and specialises in Japanese vintage clothing and designer clothing dating from the 60s to the 80s.  Every piece is unique, materials rich in quality and carefully hand picked, the price point is standardly brilliant.

Stunned by Andy’s array of collected pieces – Marni, Escada, Missoni, Celine, YSL and the like.  The Issey Miyake origami avant garde blouse (£174.66/HKD268) caught my attention, I admired its art and fabric manipulation technique and so wanting to invest it but it will not sit well over my petite shoulder.  Charlie would sooo love this.

Here are Valentina Di Pinto‘s essentials who is a Fashion Editor for Glamour Italy and whose style I just love, and whose humor (yes, it’s my favorite personality trait a person can have) and haircut I secretly dream of stealing.

My Top: my essential is a leather t-shirt from COS. When it’s really cold it is better to wear something under or over it and if it’s hot …it’s better to stay in the shade!

My Bottom: Very, very thin leather pants from H&M, a leather ’50′s skirt by Salvatore Ferragamo and oversized leather pants by Au Jour Le Jour. I’m not kidding– I’m in a leather mood!

My Jeans: Black or grey are the essentials! I usually don’t spend too much money on them because I love to change it up a lot, so jeans from H&M.

My Evening: Transparent, transparent and even more transparent…from Acne to Valentino, whatever the fabric, it has to be soft and chic. Transparency + transparency = covered!

My Intimates: In contrast with the clothes: really colorful with dark clothes and skin tones with prints from American Apparel.

My Coat: My last buys are both bicolor: black and beige. One really grungy style from Hache and one vintage from Kamanta, in double face materials. Really aristocratic.

My Bag: Like almost every season….. a new clutch bag from Marni! But a clutch is usually not enough for everyday life, so a really cool bucket bag is the right answer. From Marni too.

My Shoes: Flat or really high, nothing in the middle! The essential this season is a chain on them. Like the shinning ones from Stella McCartney or the black & white one from Etro.

My Accessories: I’m becoming addict for necklaces; I’ve never worn them before! Lizzie Fortunato and Leda Otto are essentials for me.

My Watch: It’s one of my favorite pieces, always. My essential is a vintage one from Vacheron Constantin that my grandfather gave to my father and my father gave to me.

My Glasses: RetroSUPERfuture, they are my must! I love to wear the men’s version, they’re bigger on my face!

My Scent: Like a lot of things in my style: sunglasses, jacket, and watch; my perfume also comes from a male world. For ten years, Intense by Costume National is my second skin.

My Brunette: My hair chooses for me. They have a different life, really far away from me. They wake up when they want and they don’t care about what I like.

My Lip: Coral color it’s my must, especially one from YSL.

My Skin: Good cream, like Kiehl’s oil-free lotion, and not too much make up. Sometimes it’s not enough, but a nice smile balances everything.

My Inspiration: Any woman with a story can be an inspiration. Peggy Moffitt, Monica Vitti, Lauren Bacall, Mia Farrow, Julianne Moore and more.

Now that I’m back at home in London, welcomed by the blast of cold Arctic wind on my arrival, so cold that I had to wrap my face and head with two woollen cardigans grabbed from my suitcase.  I looked like a retard.  However, there are plenty of back log HK posts to catch up on before LFW commence on the 17th, so please bare with me.

MCM is no stranger to HK’s cosmopolitan scene typically the monogram rucksacks which I’d seen on numerous occasions in Causeway Bay, Wan Chai, Central and Sheung Wan. If lucky, on press days and showroom visits too.  There were times I wanted to tap on their shoulders and ask for their style shots but feared for my British gibberish nonsense.

I love Preetma’s style. Why, you ask?

Pffff, you ask so many questions. I think it’s because she is surprising. Like take here, for example… This is the first time I saw her. It was at fashion week last September.

Which brings me to the following conclusion, and fasten your seat belts everyone to this theory of fashion and style from Professor Gaga:

I think you can’t create your own style by trying to conceptualize or reproduce someone else’s or some celebrity’s or some movement whatever it might be (Minimalist? Retro? Rock? )(Believe me, I’ve tried them all)(You want me to do a post about all the styles I’ve tried?)(Oh man, yeah, I gotta do that. I’m laughing just thinking about it.) but just combine the things that you love and let your ideas have room to roam (even if it means having days where your look ends up being totally catastrophic. Yep, I’ve had those too.)

And even if it’s a floral skirt and a pair of Creepers, well, why not?

By not being like everyone else and listening only to your taste, you make your own style. And one day people will copy it !!! Yep. That’d be way too cool.

Don’t you go thanking me now. But I know. I’m a genius.

No but seriously, you know what I mean? (Not that I’m a genius, but this whole thing with individual style?)

Caroline’s career is really interesting and I’ve wanted to talk to you about her for a long time now. Not only because she’s as funny as she is brilliant, but also because her career path was anything but linear.

By the end of the interview, she’ll tell us how she went from finance to the front rows of the runway shows, what it means to be streetstyle blog darling and what an adventure it was to take on Tank, an independent art and fashion magazine based in London.

I moved to Texas and helped with the acquisition of Snapple for Dr. Pepper. Then they moved me to Singapore, where my mom was from. There I worked on a financial services client and…that’s when I decided I hated financial services! I didn’t want to be reading books about mortgages on the weekends!!

…I wanted to read fashion magazines. So I asked my old firm to move me to their London office, and I got back into retail with Boots. (Editor’s Note : Woh, I guess you shouldn’t be afraid to move when starting your career!)

I met Masoud Golsorkhi, the founder of Tank, through some mutual friends. He was looking for someone to help him run the business at the time. I was quite young and naïve and so I thought, “Hell, why not? I’m going to give up a really well paying job and become an entrepreneur in fashion publishing.”

How would you describe what you do at Tank?

On top of all of that, we have a dozen of clients through our consulting agency, Tank Form, at any given time. So it’s shooting an ad campaign or developing a web shop, which we just did for Vivienne Westwood.  We also do custom magazines for brands like Levi’s.

How do you feel about covering celebrities in magazines?

For us, celebrities are famous architects or interesting artists or people who do interesting things, it’s not necessarily the People or the US magazine celebrities that we go for.

The internet is so fast and economical…why do you continue to do print?

The thing is, nobody really knows what the right business model for online is.  So I think our biggest challenge right now is figuring out what is the right business model for online and for print.

And now…  Time to interview the celebrity !!! You’ve always been one of my favorite people to shoot for the blog! How has becoming a street style icon affected your work?

I think the biggest impact has been around helping Tank and BecauseLondon, getting people either interested in it again or to discover it for the first time.

You have to remember there’s a bigger picture. If you can read a newspaper every day and have a bigger perspective than the fashion bubble that exists, you become much more aware that fashion isn’t your whole life.

You’ve been in Vogue quite a bit recently, what are the perks and the pressures of being a public figure?

I know a lot of young people who are eager to start their own magazines. What advice would you give them?

Just sticking to your point of view and making sure whatever you put out has a very specific point of view. And that the people you work with really share that point of view.

That, and getting a great team. We have 22 people in our studio now. But you need a great publisher, you need a great creative director, and you need a great editor. Those 3 people will see you through years of ups and downs.

What is your biggest dream for the future?

Well, I would like to be the next SI Newhouse (The chairman & CEO of Condé Nast).  But, I want to be the next SI Newhouse with an on-line and print marriage that’s future proof.

Style Jam @ Electric Sekki, part deux.  Being a quarter Hong Konger I haven’t spared a moment for my routined personal indulgence i.e make up, stylise my hair and paint/file my nails hence the pale naked face above, I looked ghastly.  A zap of pink lips in Photoshop would have done the job nicely, but peeps this is my real un-aged face.

It’s super interesting.

I’m sure you’ve all heard that there will be no Céline show this season : Phoebe Philo, the famous artistic director for the brand, is expecting a baby in April and so has decided to replace the show (which has to be something terribly stressful) with an informal, intimate presentation.

We don’t know much more (and that’s how it should be), but the first reaction I had, personally, was to be super pleased by the strong message sent by the designer. After the downfall of designers in recent seasons, to see someone take the risk of actually giving herself a personal life, it shifted something for me… Something really hopeful.

We already knew that Phoebe Philo took a break between Chloé and Céline to take care of her kids – which potentially helped her develop her professional life as well if you consider the incredible comeback she’s had for the past four seasons. She also had the entire design studio move from Paris to London so she could stay close to her family.

And it’s just so cool how at all the shows, her parents are always there, right in the front row. Her way of navigating her professional and personal life is really inspiring.

Okay, all these sentiments are sweet and all, but I’m curious to see what happens with this Céline “no show.”

Some people say choosing not to show could put the brand at risk. In that case, if this “pause” for Céline results in some sort of loss of momentum – with people losing their jobs for example – will everyone point the finger at Phoebe Philo?
A friend was telling me about a story in the French newspaper Libération : there was a study showing that ethnic criteria, which used to be the first professional discrimination factor, has shifted back (yeah!), but the first factors now are gender and maternity / pregnancy (ouch).

As we can see, it doesn’t take a lot to scare the markets and the recruiters. So to cancel a show…

Tell me, what do you think of Phoebe Philo’s choice ?

The un-necessarily air cons on HK public transport gives me a dismissive shrug, the temperature fixed at 15′c full blast in winter seems illogical, is that why HK residents fall sick so easily?  Hello? It’s giving my Brit-Chinese skin a much drier complexion and my hair too a drier scalp, without equivocation I do not want to be seen picking flakes off my hair on crowded trains (#HongKongProblems).

A while ago I was invited by Electric Sekki to have a fun dressing up session for their Style Jam project, in the past they did sessions with HK prominent bloggers Valerie Soh, T Like Bubble Tea, Sam Is Home, Cindiddy, Fashion Hedonism and Superwowomg.

Without further a do, a new haircut and not a zap of make-up in sight (too lazy), here’s my first look.

When someone told me that Solange Knowles was going to be the DJ for our party tonight at Tiffany, I practically fell out of my chair* : “Hoooow cool is thaaaat! She’s so cool we have to meet her!!! This is the perfect opportunity!”

And that’s how we ended up at her place in Brooklyn yesterday, taking a look through her closet, talking design and music (when she asked me if I wanted her to do a special dedication for me for the party, I didn’t know what to tell her – I feel like I’m about to become a lost cause when it comes to music.) and so it was a totally inspirational trip.

The colors and prints she surrounds herself with (in the picture, she’s wearing Marni pants and a vintage blouse), her haircut, and even the way she does her makeup… I’d been following her on her Damn Blog and she didn’t disappoint!

With that, I’ll stop with the superlatives and let you go. Scott just got back from two weeks and Europe and I’m so happy to be next to him again, finaaaaaallyyyy!!!

There are certain women you see all the time on my blog, and that’s just simply because they inspire me the most.

Take Elisa for example. During the fashion weeks, I can always pick her out in a crowd. She’s the queen of color blocking and has the most feminine tomboy look I’ve ever seen. I just love it. That said, I wondered what she would say if I asked her the same questions Emmanuelle Alt was asked (that interview about Emmanuelle’s staples really stuck with me and I find myself going back to it all the time, and it even dates back to the 90s! Truly a timeless woman…) It was super last minute and she was in the middle of a shoot (Elisa is a stylist) but since she’s just such a dear heart, here’s what she responded…

My Top: a silk shirt buttoned all the way up, in any blue or turquoise shade.

My Bottom: Men’s shaped trousers that are a bit short at the ankles. My favorites are vintage Chloé from the Phoebe Philo period.

My Jeans: I have to say I have just recently started to wear jeans (I discovered them while I was pregnant) but my favorites now are a pair of skinny, but not too tight at the ankles (I hate that-I call it the leggings effect), beige Zara ones! I have worn that so much they are falling into pieces : (

My Evening: I’m always swearing on silk! Whatever it could be…a blouse with a pair of shantung masculine trousers or a Dries Van Noten silk dress (I’m obsessed right now with an emerald green one…)

My Intimates: La Perla for their amazing bras and Intimissimi panties, invisible ones: no stitching, no elastic bands, perfection!

My Coat: Mmmh I have too many and I love to change it all the time… But I would say my essential for this winter, and I’m really wearing it all the time, is a suuuuper light and incredibly soft blue-grey Fendi. It has a pretty classic shape, it’s knee length, with a hidden button.

My Bag: It’s the same as the coats … I don’t really have one in particular but in my wardrobe there are for sure essentials to have:

-One clutch bag or an envelope-shaped one.

-A really big one, like a shopping bag shape, a cabas in French, where you can put your life in it and mine includes a baby, so I always need enough space to put toys, etc…

My Shoes: Well, you know I’m a shoe freak… I don’t even know how many pairs I own…but for essentials I would definitely say:

-A pair of flat derbys, like the Fred from Louboutin.

-A pair of Repetto Zizi.

- A pair of very extravagant, very high heels like Pierre Hardy.

My Accessories: I love and live for accessories so they are definitely an essential for me! What I could not live without are belts, scarves, and necklaces!

My Watch: I don’t wear one, I make them go crazy… But if I would it would be a Chanel one, the small one with the chain bracelet.

My Glasses: Love sunglasses! My essentials are a pair of KBL’s.

My Scent: A very old Sicilian perfume called Zagara, it’s made from oranges and lemon trees flowers, and jasmine flower. I can’t live without it!!!

My Blonde: Platinum blonde always! Very cold tone, almost white! My Hair is always done by Karin Bigler, a wonderful hair stylist with who I work with a lot. She comes to my house or I go to her, since I haaate going to hair salons!

My Lip: Bright matte orange from Mac.

My Skin: Natural, I only use Bare Minerals and Nuxe gold oil.

My Inspiration: My inspirations are sooooo many! Art, photography, movies, vintage, nature !!! I do not really have icons but I do have a great great admiration for Coco Chanel and Wallis Simpson…

I so want to steal all the Monki samples and mascots under my arms (including the hangers) and discreetly leave the building.  The SS12 collection is ferociously cute, comes in 4 themes – California Dancing, Nautical But Nice, Step Into The Jungle and Suprematist Move…my favourite.  I was very fortunate to meet the Monki Concept Manager Yvonne Da Silva (a fellow Swede and Chinese herself), so lovely in fact our casual conversation lasted…well, it could last a lifetime.  I’m very looking forward to their first stand alone store opening on Carnaby Street, London on February!  Can’t wait to splurge, woohoo!

Yep, more pictures of the sea again (Tai Mei Tuk and Sam Mun Tsai) are you envious or just feeling sea sick?  I don’t want to swear here I’m truly loving it out here!

Slowly I’m adjusting to the hectic life in Hong Kong, attending press days/events and work meetings, networking, I have gained new found friendship with bloggers and media peeps alike, the PRs are seriously amazing here.  I’ll be back to my home turf in 2 weeks and Marmite on buttered toast will the first thing I must do when I arrive.

I forgot just how cold it can get in New York (20 degrees yesterday with a windchill that could freeze your blood) and I really admire the girls who can stay chic among those of us in military parkas (me) and Canada Goose (90% of the population of Soho where I spent yesterday afternoon).

So bravo to Melodi for this simple, warm, and chic outfit – I love the detail of the sleeves and the white gloves!
