The Bucket Bag is Spring 2014′s Biggest Accessories Trend

The Bucket Bag is Spring 2014′s Biggest Accessories Trend

For those of you who wanted one, it’s probably time to come to terms with the fact that you’re not going to get a Mansur Gavriel Bucket Bag for spring. (Add it to your wishlist at Net-a-Porter, though – a friend who did so fairly recently saw it show up in her shopping bag last week.) That’s a bummer, but the good news is that Mansur Gavriel was on the front end of a trend that has since become huge – bucket bags are spring’s biggest handbag shape trend, and the brands entering into the fray include everyone from Opening Ceremony to Hermes.

Traditionalists will be glad to see that Louis Vuitton has introduced lots of new versions of the original bucket bag, the Noe, including Epi leather in perfect summer shades. On the less expensive end of the spectrum, lots of contemporary brands have pounced on the casual, unstructured style in a way that will surely appeal to younger customers. For the best of the best, check out what’s going on below.

Olivia Wilde Goes All Black with a Gucci Fringe Bag

Olivia Wilde Goes All Black with a Gucci Fringe Bag

Here’s Olivia Wilde, sipping a milkshake in the West Village while doing crazy things for maternity fashion. Olivia has accessorized her chic, all-black ensemble with a black suede Gucci Nouveau Fringe Bag. This bag was actually inspired by a similar 1940′s design from Gucci’s archives. (I imagine the vintage version might’ve had just as much bamboo detailing, but not nearly as much fringe.) You can obtain Olivia’s exact bag for $2,500 at Gucci.

If you’re not prone to wearing all-black ensembles in mid-April, I feel obliged to point out that this bag is also available in a pleasing range of bold, eye-popping spring hues. The Gucci Nouveau Fringe Bag was an obvious choice for our round-up of the “16 Best Fringe Bags For Spring”. We also took an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the exquisite craftsmanship behind this unique handbag in “Inside The Making of a Gucci Nouveau Fringe Bag.”

PurseBlog Goes to Coachella

PurseBlog Goes to Coachella

Last weekend, more than 100,000 people headed to Indio, California to attend the highly anticipated Coachella Arts and Music Festival, and 100,000 more will do so this weekend. With over 150 music acts on the bill, including Outkast, Arcade Fire, Pharell, Lorde, Ellie Goulding, Lana Del Rey, Haim, Muse and Calvin Harris, we found no shortage of famous faces to be seen in attendance. While Coachella is primarily known for it’s music, it’s certainly a fashion scene at well.

The Coachella look is perhaps best described as “glamorous bohemian,” with plenty of fringe bags, hipster hats, colorful prints, flower crowns and quirky sunglasses. During the day, there are a tons of parties to attend, thrown by brands like Lacoste, Guess and H&M. If you’re looking to spot celebrities, you’ll be sure to find plenty of them here. (Just make sure you’re on the list beforehand!) If you’re more of a music junkie like me, head to the festival early to explore the grounds and catch some of your favorite acts.

Take a look at some of the pictures from my Coachella adventures, including the obligatory In-n-Out stop, the bags I brought and the infamous Coachella Ferris Wheel (if you ever get a chance to ride, DO IT!).

Bag: Gucci Swing Leather Tote

Price: $995 via Gucci

Why It’s the Bag of the Week: Gucci has quickly turned into one of my favorite brands over the past few seasons. The Swing Tote caught my attention for both the classic, clean design and functional, long double handles. Furthermore, this bag costs under $1,000, a rare feat in the premier designer handbag world.

Outfit of the Week: All About a Gucci Bag

Outfit of the Week: All About a Gucci Bag

I never thought I’d be saying these words, but I’m really loving fringe bags right now. It’s not like me to want an aggressively fringed bag (actually, it’s really not like me), but some of them on the market right now have truly nailed the design. The first brand to look to when it comes to fringe is Gucci, their fringe bags are making major statements and I’m obsessing over them.

My outfit of the week was created with the Gucci Fringed Textured-Leather Tote as the star of the show. While skinny jeans are still incredibly hip, I enjoy seeing flare jeans make a bit of a resurgence. As always, I love pairing a nice crisp white blouse with my denim, and then I added a bit of color with the Alice + Olivia jacket. Finish it off with the right pair of pumps and great accessories, and you have exactly what I’d love to be wearing right now.

Inside the Making of a Gucci Nouveau Fringe Bag

Inside the Making of a Gucci Nouveau Fringe Bag

Among the things that handbag lovers tell ourselves in order to make exorbitant accessories prices seem reasonable, “The crafstmanship is exquisite!” is one of the most popular. It’s rare that consumers get much of a peek inside that process, though. Late last year, we took you behind the scenes into the making of Gucci’s iconic bamboo trim, and now Gucci has thrown open its workshop doors once again to reveal a few of its secrets, this time with the Gucci Nouveau Fringe Bag.

These photos, originally posted to Gucci’s Facebook page, provide a glimpse inside the construction of the brand’s marquee Spring 2014 bag, including the 46 individual pieces of precision-cut fringe that make up each bag’s lower trim. The finished product can be yours for $2,500 via Gucci – check out the gallery below to see what goes into that price.

Welcome to PurseBlog March Madness!

Welcome to PurseBlog March Madness!

You might have heard a whisper here and there about some sort of basketball tournament that’s starting this week. Most members of the PurseBlog team went to football schools, so while this may not be our time of year in a sporting sense, we believe in substituting handbags for literally anything in which we are not naturally interested. With that in mind, we’re proud to announce PurseBlog March Madness!

We’ve chosen 16 of the biggest handbag brands in the world at a variety of price levels, and we’d like you to help us determine the best bag brand of 2014. You’ll have two days (work days – even handbag critics need a weekend) to vote on each round, and once we’ve tabulated the votes in each bracket matchup, we’ll move the winners on to the next round to face a new opponent and a new round of voting by you, our readers. We’ll do this all the way until a winner is crowned!

PurseBlog Goes to SXSW

PurseBlog Goes to SXSW

After a long and amazing week at South by Southwest, it feels good to finally be back in New York (minus the cold weather, of course). Last Thursday, Amanda and I jetted off Austin to spend a week at SXSW Interactive, attending thought-provoking panels and keynotes, eating tons of delicious food, exploring the city with great bags and making new friends.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with SXSW, it’s an annual music, film and interactive conference that takes place over a three week time period in Austin, Texas. The Interactive portion is primarily focused on digital creativity and emerging technologies. There are presentations and panels from some of the biggest people in the digital world, trade shows, networking events and an endless amount of parties to attend.

From our flight to our food, we documented just about every step of the trip to give you a look at the PurseBlog team’s SXSW experience. Take a look some of the highlights from our trip and the places we visited.

Perfect Pairs: Gucci Bamboo and Tibi Mules

Perfect Pairs: Gucci Bamboo and Tibi Mules

After seeing the full Gucci Spring 2014 Handbags collection, I instantly fell in love. However, like the our original review mentions, I also worried a bit about practicality. New York weather is not always in a fashion girl’s favor; one gust of wind and I’d be hitting an innocent bystander with the fringe of my Gucci Bamboo Fringe Shopper, not to mention that the fringe is probably a bit long for my rather petite stature. Despite these difficulties, I still love this bag, and that’s what inspired me to pair it with the Tibi Embellished Leather Mules.

Mules are definitely among the most dominant shoe trends for Spring 2014, and these Tibi mules are my favorite that I’ve seen so far. The sandal’s upper is substantial enough to secure the top of your foot to the show better than many mules, which makes it one of the more practical shoes of its kind.

The wood detailing is a pleasantly unexpected touch that works well to balance the heavily embellished heel, which is what instantly caught my attention about the shoe. With that detailing and the bag’s luxe suede fringe, this pairing makes the ultimate bohemian duo.

Come read about lust-worthy shoe trends, the latest news on luxury footwear and everything else you could want to know about footwear everyday on TalkShoes!

Perfect Pairs: Coach Mini Borough and Gucci Bomber Jacket

Perfect Pairs: Coach Mini Borough and Gucci Bomber Jacket

People who know me, know that I’m a jeans-and-T-shirt kind of gal. I have an extensive collection of pieces that are easy to wear and not considered statement pieces, I leave my bags to do most of the attention-catching. But after seeing the droves of people at New York Fashion Week, I always reconsider some fun pieces that I want to add to my wardrobe.

Even if you add a stand-out piece, you want to make sure it is something that still fits your personal aesthetic. For me, a bomber jacket works with my typical outfits, and right when I laid eyes upon the Gucci Silk-Chiffon and Metallic Bomber Jacket, I was hooked. The jacket features plenty of black, which is easy to wear, but I’m drawn to the metallic jacquard. Look closely and you’ll see the sleeves are silk chiffon, which really makes this jacket quite the glamorous piece.

Gucci Silk and Metallic Bomber Jacket

As for the bag I’d like to pair with it, I still love a variety of colors paired together, and I love the Coach Mini Borough in a light chambray hue. The color will contrast well with the jacket, and the shade of blue is soft and stunning.

Coach Mini Borough Blue

These pieces could be called high/low, with the jacket costing $3,700 via Net-A-Porter and the bag running $378 via Coach.

Gucci Goes Back to Basics for its Fall 2014 Handbags

Gucci Goes Back to Basics for its Fall 2014 Handbags

During her tenure at the brand, creative director Frida Giannini has taken enormous strides in streamlining and simplifying what it is to be the Gucci woman. Tom Ford’s hard-nosed excess was fun, but Giannini has long offered up a softer experience that is more viscerally luxurious, and she’s taken that even another step further with Gucci’s Fall 2014 handbags. The collection features shapes both familiar and new, all made minimalist in soft leather and muted tones.

Gucci fans will immediately recognized the newly pared-down New Jackie Hobo, which does away with some of the trim details that were holding the design in the last decade and makes it feel more languid and casual. In addition, you’ll find small, structured shoulder bags with generous straps, plus oversized totes in what appears to be very sumptuous leather. To say we’re looking forward to seeing these bags in stores would be an understatement; this collection doesn’t try to hard or reach too far, and it does a lot of thinks exactly right.

Shield Your Eyes – Neon Yellow is Here to Blind Us All for Another Season

Shield Your Eyes – Neon Yellow is Here to Blind Us All for Another Season

Yesterday was a truly dreary and bitter day in New York City (as they all have been lately, except for Super Bowl Sunday, because Pepsi paid for it to be warm, or something), but because fashion lives in an alternate universe, I was met by nothing but bright, eye-searing neon yellow when I opened up my browser to begin compiling post topics for the week. If you thought that, after season upon season of fluorescents, we might be on to something else by now, I have some bad news for you.

On the other hand, if you dig brights and love the power that neons have to make your tan look even deeper and darker, you’re probably going to dig what you see below. And lest we make assumptions, it’s not just youth-oriented contemporary brands who are hanging on to neons for another season; names as venerable as Gucci and Nina Ricci are still into acid yellow, and we could have done this entire post with Valentino products alone.

Perfect Pairs: Gucci Soho Disco Bag and Cartier LOVE Necklace

Perfect Pairs: Gucci Soho Disco Bag and Cartier LOVE Necklace

I remember an era in my life where yellow gold was so out of style. No one wanted to wear yellow gold and it became associated with gaudiness, but right now yellow gold is taking center stage once again and I’m thrilled about it.

Today’s perfect pair is all about two things that are both a girl’s best friend, jewelry and designer handbags. If I received both of these items together, well, I’d have to call them a perfect match.

Gucci Soho Disco Gold Bag

First we have the Gucci Soho Disco Bag, a bag that I own in red and have become utterly obsessed with. The pouch is more spacious than you might imagine, but it’s not bulky. I love the long shoulder strap and the simple design. There’s no Gucci monogram fabric to be found, but there is an embroidered interlocking GG on the front of the bag. This is a bag that transitions from day to night easily and because the bag isn’t too large, and the gold and beige ombre makes a great combo. Buy via Gucci for $1,100.

Cartier LOVE Necklace

My jewelry obsession really grew over the past year. After Vlad got me one of my dream bracelets, the Cartier Love Bracelet in gold with diamonds, I started checking out other pieces from the collection. I don’t want to be a walking Cartier Love billboard, but I wouldn’t mind having the interlocking Cartier Love Necklace. The interlocking rings symbolize eternal love and, let’s be honest, eternal style. Buy via Cartier for $2,170.

Give me a crochet cream dress and I’ll be yours forever: this Stylekeepers dress was supposed to leave with me to Mexico last month but It was instead forgotten home.
Not too bad: here is how I wore it on Wednesday, in a strangely warm day in the streets of Milano. Mixed with Chanel velvet flat booties, denim jacket and maxi hat.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Carries Gucci to the Salon

Sarah Michelle Gellar Carries Gucci to the Salon

Sarah Michelle Gellar was spotted leaving the Andy Lecompte Salon in Los Angeles this week after getting her hair colored, carrying a compact, black Gucci Soho Disco Bag, which features a rather giant tassel at the zipper and an embroidered interlocking “G” Gucci logo. (Andy Lecompte is much beloved by non-naturally blonde Hollywood types.) You can buy your own Soho Disco in cream for $895 at Gucci.

You probably already know that Sarah Michelle’s new CBS show, “The Crazy Ones,” was very quickly picked up for a second season, but were you aware that her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. is a featured player on the new Lifetime show “Witches of East End?” “Witches” recently ended its first season right before the holiday, and has also been renewed for another season. 2014 is already set to be a prosperous new year for the Gellar-Prinze household.

Shine Straight Into Spring with Gucci

Shine Straight Into Spring with Gucci

Everyone has their own strategies for surviving the grey days of winter with their glamour intact. Some people take the opportunity to stock up on cashmere, others embrace lipcolor in shades of crimson and wine to provide a little bit of drama. Our personal favorite avenue, though, is to add a dose of shine to our accessories. Right now, that means trying to choose between all of Gucci’s metallic handbags, shoes and accessories.

For a single, cohesive collection, Gucci manages to do silvers, golds and bronzes in a surprisingly diverse array. The brand currently offers gleaming metallic python, dark-to-light ombre metallic leather, crackled-texture metallics and color-shifting metallics that land just this side of holographic. That’s not to mention, of course, the straight-up glossy finishes that you’d hope for. The look is lush and luxurious, and all of these pieces will take you to spring and beyond with a little bit of shine. Shop the full selection via Gucci or explore our favorite looks below.

The 12 Best Gifts for Mom

Getting a gift for your mom can be tricky, no matter her age. You want to carefully straddle the line between luxury and practicality; I don’t know any moms who aren’t busy (my mom, who is retired and has two grown children, still never picks up her cell phone because she’s always out and about), and I also don’t know any who couldn’t use a little bit of a treat. Combining those two ideas is what makes the perfect gifts for mom.

Below, we’ve tried to pick a dozen gifts at different price points that would work for moms of nearly any age. They’re timeless, luxurious indulgences that will make your mom feel like a million bucks. I wish I owned most of them myself, and I don’t even have kids. The Newsboy Cap

I really want one…

The Gucci pre-fall collection is a massive 39 looks. Of those 39 looks, 26 of them are styled with a newsboy cap. And it looks so good.

I love the model off duty element it adds and who doesn’t love a little model of duty (Gisele off duty…Joan off duty…)?

I’m thinking about working one into my winter wardrobe, what do you think?

You’re Going to Want a “Radiant Orchid” Bag in 2014 Because Pantone Says So

You’re Going to Want a “Radiant Orchid” Bag in 2014 Because Pantone Says So

Every year around this time, the color experts (which I would think were a weird title, if my own title were not “handbag blogger”) at Pantone get together and inform the world of the color we’ll be wearing in the next 12 months, as the result of some trend forecasting and also Pantone’s desire to remind people who are not graphic designers that it exists. The 2014 Pantone Color of the Year shall be a pink-purple known as Radiant Orchid, and it looks like a bunch of handbag designers figured it out before last week’s announcement.

With relatively little effort, we found over a dozen designer bags of various price points and brands that either hit “Radiant Orchid” right on the nose or get particularly close. It’s a nice shade; vibrant, but not aggressively bright, feminine but not too sweet. It can tip toward inexpensive-looking at times, but we think the bags below all pull it off with aplomb.

Beyond the Handbag: Travel with a Designer Suitcase

Beyond the Handbag: Travel with a Designer Suitcase

Say you’re a person who owns a lot of designer bags. (That shouldn’t be too much of a stretch, if you’re already here.) You’re probably used to a certain level of quality and luxury in the things you carry, and when it comes time to get on a plane, you probably find your luggage a little bit underwhelming. Black Samsonite is functional and reasonably durable, of course, but the thrill just isn’t there. The good news is that your favorite brand probably has a designer suitcase ready for all your travel needs.

Louis Vuitton has, of course, been in the luggage game for more than a century, and other brand have dabbled here and there. Even more have expanded their offerings of weekenders and carryalls, making a luxury long-weekend even easier to pull off, even if your life doesn’t wholly match your Pinterest account of choice. Now, a lot of those brands are probing the last frontier of ever-more-massive luxury goods: actual suitcases. Most of the options below are rolling suitcases intended to be used as a carry-on, but let’s face it: if you can afford a $10,000 Valextra suitcase in pristine ivory leather, you can probably afford the $25 checked bag fee. (Or, you know, a private jet.)

The biggest travel season of the year is about to kick off, so now’s the time to make sure your luggage game is locked up. We, of course, have a few suggestions.

Last month, I gave you a closer look at my Gucci Bamboo Shopper and promised a full review would follow. Well, it’s here. There are many reasons I want to review this bag, but one of the main ones is very simple: I’m obsessed with this Gucci stunner. When it comes to a tote, I’m never sure if I will feel incredibly strong about it, but it turns out that this tote is one of my favorite bags in my entire collection.

Read on to see how my Gucci Bamboo Shopper scores in our purseonals ratings.

Gucci Bamboo Shopper Tote in Central Park

Aesthetics 5 Stars

While entirely new designs lure me in immediately, it’s the straightforward simplicity of classic designs that I ultimately love. A good tote is a must in anyone’s handbag wardrobe, and for my busy lifestyle, I was looking for something a little larger than my usual.

This Gucci bag is the bag. The overall appearance is simple in concept, but the finished product is simply beautiful. We gave you a behind the scenes look at the making of Gucci Bamboo, and though I already adored the touch the bamboo handles add, knowing the intricate work that goes into making those bamboo handles has left me even more enthralled with this bag. The logo is small and beautiful, and the blue leather is a bright-as-neutral hue that works with everything in my wardrobe.

The outward appearance of a bag might be one of the most important categories, because unlike how we are taught to judge one another, what’s on the outside matters when it comes to your bags. This Gucci bag is lovely.

Usability + Functionality 5 Stars

My Gucci Bamboo Shopper easily gets five stars when it comes to usability and functionality. Everything about this bag makes sense, from the optional shoulder strap to the separate interior compartments and magnetic closure.

The top of the bag is secured by a strong magnetic closure tab; actually, it’s super strong. Sometimes I have to give it a good yank to separate it. But that is the only flaw, because it opens to a hyper-functional interior. The interior has three areas which are separated by a middle zip compartment. I’ve found this bag ideal for everything from day to day use to traveling. There are additional pockets and compartments as well.

Often I prefer a zip-top tote, but this bag really just works. I typically carry it with the optional shoulder strap, and I love how easy the interior is to access. A true test of a usable bag is my ability to get into it while I’m walking, and with this Gucci bag, that’s possible.

Gucci Bamboo Shopper Tote Detail

Quality + Construction 5 Stars

This bag easily scores a five for quality and function. The thick leather doesn’t stiffen, it’s super supple and doesn’t add additional weight. I’ve owned this bag for a couple months and it still smells brand new, which is a great nod to the quality of the leather. I already mentioned the intricate process of creating the bamboo handles, and paired with the beautiful materials used on the rest of this bag, it’s a winner.

As far as construction goes, I haven’t witnessed one tiny piece of this bag out of place. I always check the corners of a bag as well as the stitching for evidence of easy wear-and-tear, but this bag shows none of that.

Gucci Bamboo Shopper Tote Detail

Value 4.5 Stars

With bag prices sykrocketing, I took into account the size of this tote along with the quality of the brand when thinking about value. The price is $2,290, and when I compare that to other market prices, it’s a very fair ticket price.

Gucci Bamboo Shopper Tote Detail

The ‘It’ Factor 4 Stars

It’s funny, when I think about the “it” factor, I think about the on-trend nature of the bag, but I also think about the everyday wearability. Some bags are so trendy that they score off the charts at a specific time in their lifespans, but a few months later we question why we ever loved the bag.

This Gucci bag is timeless. The shape is nothing new or extraordinary, but the bamboo handles set it apart and give a nod to the history of the brand while not looking outdated. This bag is simple, but I find it absolutely stunning.

Gucci Bamboo Shopper

Total Score 5 Stars

My Gucci Bamboo Shopper scores 28 out of a possible 30, a very high score. I’m in love with it and know many of you would love it as well. There are different color options and sizes available, and while I love the exclusive-to-Gucci.com blue hue I have, the black is an incredibly chic option as well. Buy via Gucci.com for $2,290.

12 Bags to Pick Up From the Resort 2014 Pre-Orders (They’re Here Already!)

12 Bags to Pick Up From the Resort 2014 Pre-Orders (They’re Here Already!)

One of the nice things about fashion is that if you don’t like the season which you’re currently experiencing in objective reality when you step outside, the industry is more than happy to let you live in next season or last season, depending on how picky and/or rich you are. Prefer last season’s goods or want to save some cash? Something’s always on sale. Want to fast-forward and get the pick of next season’s litter? Resort 2014 handbag pre-orders are popping up as we speak.

These handbags, from a cranberry Gucci tote to a lime Reed Krakoff minibag, are all nominally from these brands’ Cruise or Resort 2014 collections, meaning that most of them have projected ship dates of on or before January 2014. Some, like the Fendi Peekaboo, are expected to arrive before the end of November, and a couple are projected out as far as May. Those pieces, if they are accurately labeled as Resort, will likely arrive far sooner. Whenever they show up, we’re sure they’ll be warmly received.

7 Beauty Products We Can’t Live Without and 10 Makeup Bags To Put Them In

7 Beauty Products We Can’t Live Without and 10 Makeup Bags To Put Them In

Let’s be honest, fall weather makes our hair look great and skin look dry. With the cooler temperatures and dryer air, our faces require a little more TLC around this time of the year, which is why we never leave home with our favorite beauty products. The problem, of course, is that loose beauty products in your handbag can turn out to be a HUGE disaster (just ask the Louis Vuitton we lost to a tube of tinted moisturizer), which is why we ALWAYS stuff everything in our makeup bags.

Normally, a bag just big enough to fit your essentials does the job, but when you’re needing to stuff a makeup bag full of a pot of Kiehl’s Avocado Eye Cream, a bottle of hydrating face lotion and three sticks of Baby Lips, your bag is going to need to get a big bigger. We’ve rounded up our seven favorite beauty products this season and 10 makeup bags to fit them all in. Now if only we could fit our aesthetician in there as well.

PurseBlog Asks: Would You Carry Your Baby in a Designer Baby Carrier?

PurseBlog Asks: Would You Carry Your Baby in a Designer Baby Carrier?

This past weekend I went to my friend’s baby shower, which is the first of many to come in the next few months. I’ve hit that stage in life where many of my friends are pregnant, so I find myself checking out baby bags and accessories often. In 2005, I wrote about the Gucci Baby Carrier, and that post still gets tons of comments to this day.

I want to revisit the idea of a designer baby carrier, and I want to know where you stand. Many moms and dads use baby carriers for their kids regularly, but I’ve never had a real-life sighting of a designer baby carrier in action. I’ve seen plenty of moms with everything from designer duds to designer diaper bags, but the designer baby carrier remains elusive.

The point of the carrier is the same as all others: to transport the baby on your person. There are a few options from Gucci, but I am sharing the classic GG print along with a zoo patch, because I think it’s cute. This carrier is meant for a baby between 7 and 20 lbs, which won’t last that long. What do you think: would you carry your baby in a designer baby carrier? Shop this one via Gucci for $850.

Woman Steals Nearly 1,000 Designer Bags, Sells Them on eBay

Woman Steals Nearly 1,000 Designer Bags, Sells Them on eBay

Considering how many luxury boutiques have reputations for staffs that seem to purposefully ignore customers who don’t fit a very narrow profile, it’s perhaps surprising that more people don’t simply pick up bags and trot right out the door with them. After all, if a salesperson is busy pretending you don’t exist, it must be hard for him or her to make sure you don’t get a case of the sticky fingers. Apparently a woman in England has been using that behavior to her advantage to the tune of 904 handbags for the price of free ninety-nine.

The woman, Jayne Rand, got caught on handbag 905, according to the BBC. There’s no word on what that fateful bag was, but during her years-long spree, Rand swiped bags from brands like Louis Vuitton, Dior, Gucci, Prada and Mulberry, mostly from high-end department stores. She traveled around the country to vary her targets and help avoid detection on repeated visits, and her technique was simple: walk in without a bag, put one on her shoulder, walk around browsing with it for a while and then leave with it.

Rand wasn’t snatching bags to fill out her own collection, though. Instead, she sold the bags on eBay, some to repeat customers for whom she’d boost particular bags on request. She made over $140,000 on the bags via the auction site, with the court-determined value of the bags being over double that. The actual retail prices would have been much higher.

A British court has sentenced Rand to a year and a half in jail for her one-woman theft ring, which seems a tad short compared to what she might get for a similar spree in America. What’s more interesting, though, is that with how many authentic designer bags she sold, it’s likely that one of our readers or PurseForum members may have bid on one of her auctions or bought a bag from her. So, does that name ring a bell, eBayers?

Get Spring 2014′s Biggest Bag Trend Right Now with These 15 Pale Bags

Get Spring 2014′s Biggest Bag Trend Right Now with These 15 Pale Bags

If you followed along with your Spring 2014 runway roundups, you already know what I’m about to say. Pale bags, ranging from ivory to blush, are the biggest trend going for spring by far. After what feels like season upon season of prints, neons, rococo embellishments and exotics, a simple swath of dove grey leather actually does feel pretty fresh, if perhaps a little tricky to keep clean under non-ideal circumstances. (Put away your denim, lest you turn the back side of your new bag entirely blue.)

Because fashion is slowly kicking and screaming its way into the instant-gratification machine we all wish it were, the bags that rode the runway aren’t going to be available for months, but we’ve found plenty of current options to keep you looking ladylike through the winter months. Speaking of which, the more traditional among you might feel like this isn’t a cold-weather trend, but au contraire – shades like ivory and blush are all over this season’s most covetable outwear, and as long as the tone of the color and the material are sufficiently autumnal, you should feel free to wear colors like pink and white year-round. White linen? No. White leather? Pile it on.

Obsession: Gucci Bamboo Shopper

Obsession: Gucci Bamboo Shopper

We shared a three part series on Gucci Bamboo, including the history of, the making of, and the authority of Gucci Bamboo. It’s easy to see why Gucci Bamboo has secured a place in the accessories world, as the quality and craftsmanship reign supreme and the designs are impeccable.

I’ve been using my Gucci Bamboo Shopper for a few weeks now and it is one of my favorite bags of my entire collection. The leather is super delicious, it’s smooshy but not too thin and after just over a month of use it still smells new. I love the texture on the leather as well. Then there are the bamboo handles which give the outside of this bag the added element that sends the design into a realm of simple perfection.

Gucci Bamboo Shopper $2,290 and Gucci Patent Leather Pumps $595

The inside isn’t just a big space where you throw all of your items, there are three separate compartments that very practical and functional. In fact, it makes me wonder how I ever used a large tote without a thoughtful interior. Each section has a magnetic snap and there are separate pockets for smaller items. I love the bamboo handles but there is also a long optional shoulder strap as well.

I could continue explaining every little detail of the bag, and I plan to soon in our Purseonals category, but for now I had to share my absolute love for this bag. I have it in the hue of blue that is exclusive to the online store, and I can honestly say this color is as versatile as black. Buy exclusively via Gucci for $2,290.

PurseForum Roundup – October 11

PurseForum Roundup – October 11

So, is everyone absolutely exhausted from the National Handbag Day festivities? We celebrated this auspicious day by scouring the PurseForum for wonderful handbags, of course, but really, everyday is Handbag Day for us! This week, our stops in the PurseForum Roundup include Dior, Valentino, Gucci and more. So finish putting away those National Handbag Day decorations and come on in and join us!

Gucci Houndstooth Bag

In Gucci this week, we spotted two of our favorite words right on page one: “Instant Reveal”. D.Grl12 got right down to business and showed off her gorgeous birthday gift, the retro Seventies Web Boston, a bag that pulls at our vintage heart strings. Missarewa also added to her collection this week, and we could definitely feel the love as she revealed this classic bag. Before a reveal often comes a decision, and LVBarbieDoll is looking for opinions on a purchase, if anyone would like to weigh in. As usual, we pick both options (but if absolutely pressed, we choose orange). How about you?

PurseBlog readers know we have a special place in our hearts for the Gucci Bamboo Top Handle (BTH) bags, and our Gucci PurseForum family feels the same way. The thread dedicated to this line is always front and center, and this week we have a reveal and are anxiously awaiting a new BTH shopper for BagLovinMom.

Gucci Collection

In the Show Your Collection thread, we caught up with Dorf, our gentleman connoisseur we introduced to you last month, who treated us to a family photo of his collection, and it is fabulous. Collection threads are a staple of the designer subforums, so if you have a favorite designer, be sure to check out what our members have curated in their closets – you won’t be sorry!

Dior Watch

Are you pressed for time? Well, DiorrificLady sure isn’t. National Handbag Day had us feeling particularly drawn to the iconic design houses, and when we stopped into Dior, we found a watch reveal that made time stand still. It took a moment to tear ourselves away from this Grand Bal, but we did, and then stumbled right into another blockbuster reveal from this lucky lady! And DiorrificLady was not the only member with something new to share this week. If you love summer, you will absolutely swoon over Nahreen’s new Lady Dior in a delightful shade that will be a great pop of color in the fall, too. Lucky Materiliasic28 picked up a sweet little vintage piece this week, too.

Dior Crocodile Bag

We have seen lots of wonderful posts in the Dior in Action thread this past month, too, so please stop by and see how our members are styling their bags. Superstar collector kellyng dropped in with a shot of her Samourai that made us weak in the knees. There is a lot to this design house, and if you are just getting familiar with Dior and want to learn more, we have a wonderful reference library to help you find your way around. We hope to see you in Dior soon!

Valentino Rockstuds

This week, Valentino‘s first page was all about first purchases – some we missed the first time around, like nascarfan’s summer splurge on a pair of Rockstuds and a fabulous bag to match. New mom weetzie_bat recently made her first post-baby bag purchase, and it’s a beauty (or it is a beast? Check the thread to see). U580729 picked up a bag and shoe combination in an eye-catching nuanced nude, and mga13 had us mesmerized by the details of her extraordinary snake bracelet evening bag.

Black and White Outfit

We loved this photo of LeeLee1098 in her black and white ensemble in the Action thread – LeeLee is sporting the best accessory of them all, a happy smile!

Diamond Finger Cuff

This week, we found a fun new thread in the Jewelry Box and we’re sure it’s going to be a winner. It’s the Insane Wish List thread, and it is off to a rollicking start. Please drop in and add to the insanity! We also caught up with the Statement Jewelry thread and found ITlovesfashion’s incredible armor ring photographed against a background of equally incredible hydrangeas. (See, we have been hanging out in Home and Garden, too!)

The Jewelry Box is also a place for serious conversations, many of which revolve around diamonds. We have plenty of reference and photo threads, dovetailed with ongoing discussions that really get to the heart of the all-important facets of a diamond purchase. (See what we did there?) Phoebe_0526 got the ball rolling this summer with her GIA Diamond thread, which is a must-read for anyone considering a diamond purchase. Once you have made your purchase, we have a long-lived, active thread with everything you need to know about cleaning your diamonds, too.

Hermes Kelly Bag

The Hermès subforum is the place to go for beautiful bags any time, any day, all day long. One of our favorite threads is the Perfect Match thread, where members showcase combinations of bags and scarves, and sometimes, as in the case of Aurelia24, a super hot pair of shoes as well! By the way, her bag is 63 years old, which is a testament to the quality and craftsmanship of this singular brand. Hermès may be out of reach for many of us, to be sure, but being able to share these pieces with our gracious members is always a real treat. The Fall 2013 scarves are making an appearance in this dedicated thread, and The Clubhouse is loaded with photographs of shawls, scarves, and everything else Hermès.

Hermes Trio with Kelly Bag

We don’t want to leave Hermès without a reveal or two, of course, and we found even more vintage to share with you. Katillathehun was thrilled with her vintage classic Kelly, which is now off for refurbishing (though we thought it looked amazing right out of the box). We can’t wait to see more of this splendid bag! Aurelia24′s vintage Mini Kelly is not to be missed – we cannot imagine a more charming pop of color for the fall.

Before you leave Hermès, be sure to check out the Non-Hermès Indulgences thread. There’s always something wonderful to see there, like aerinha’s new shoes!

Well, Roundup fans, with that we end this exciting week on PurseBlog and PurseForum. We hope you have enjoyed your time with us – we certainly appreciate each and every one of you and absolutely love your comments, photographs and conversations. Happy Friday, and remember National Handbag Day will be here again before you know it!

The Many Bags of Celebs at Milan Fashion Week Spring 2014

The Many Bags of Celebs at Milan Fashion Week Spring 2014

The name “Fashion Week” is so misleading. A quick seven days of fancy clothes and we’re done and can move on, right? Please? NOPE. Fashion already has a warped sense of time (winter coats for sale in June, anyone?), and now we’re done with our third week of Fashion Week, this one in Italy. Milan Fashion Week has come and gone, but as with both New York and London before it, the full story of the event isn’t just what happens inside the shows. There’s a whole world of fashion going on outside as well, and that includes some people of varying levels of fame carrying handbags. Naturally, where there are people carrying bags, we are there to document it. Take a look at the best handbag moments from outside Milan’s Spring 2014 shows.

The Best Bags of Milan Fashion Week Spring 2014

The Best Bags of Milan Fashion Week Spring 2014

Usually, I can count on Italy to give me at least one collection of handbags per season that hits me right in the heart. The Italians know their leather, and their Fashion Week is stocked with brands as well known for their bags as they are for anything. This time around, though, Milan Fashion Week Spring 2014 felt at times more like it was revisiting its greatest hits than charting new territory. I saw some new versions of existing bags that I loved, but I never got that new thing that flooded my brain with serotonin.

That’s not to say that there weren’t some accessories highlights – in fact, they were abundant. The new versions of the Fendi 2Jours were excellent, and the Prada face-painted bags are sure to become collectors’ items. Beyond that, there were lovely exotics in light colors galore, from Ferragamo to Versace. Even if the season wasn’t fully satisfying, there was plenty to love. Check out our picks for the best of the season below.
