Electric Energy in NYC by Adam Garelick

NYCNYCNYC
I spent the last week in New York and fell in love with the city all over again. It’s simply the best!

The serendipitous ways, the ease of bopping around, ice cream cones in central park, trains out of Penn Station to wherever your heart desires, little city pockets just waiting to be fallen in love with (ehh hemmm Red Hook), endless restaurants, incredible individual style, art everywhere your eyeballs land and my favorite part, the electric energy.

When I came across this energetic NY series by Adam Garelick I couldn’t resist posting it. His cityscapes are filled with strong contrast, rich textures, shapes, patterns, and the bright lights of the Big Apple that “document the visual richness of a city that [he is] fortunate to call home.” His work ranges from wide city views to small, subtle details and large, recognizable landmarks that are exclusive to New York City.

Garelick uses film and develops each negative by hand with very minimal post-processing. He rarely includes human figures in his compositions and, in doing so, presents a city that seems quiet and empty. However, the light trails of moving cars as well as the thousands of windows suggest the presence of bustling urban life hidden behind the darkness of night.

The artist says, “I’ve had the chance to explore Manhattan and all of its electric energy. But now, I try to capture what lies beneath the energy. That’s why most of my cityscapes are devoid of people. I try to capture moments of solitude. And they exist, even here.”

Rad right?

In a world of endless noise on the internet and outside I found myself lost in this calm photo series, Patience by Josef Hoflehner.

Silence, secluded and empty spaces are the main themes of the body of work which was shot from 2006-2013. He chose unique locations as examples of the dynamic between man-made and the natural world, as well as total absence of humanity.

I just love it. Don’t you? Keep getting lost in his work here and after the jump.

A Parisian Studio

Last time I was in Paris, I ended up – somewhat by accident – in the photography studio of the adorable and talented Fred Meylan.
The studio is set up in a very old Parisian apartment, and everything has been renovated with respect for the history of the space. It’s got a masculine feel, but it’s cozy at the same time – totally unlike our bright, white studio, but I absolutely loved it.

I have been sucked into the world of interior design and outdoor living space on Pinterest, thanks to my over enthusiastic pins and repins catalogued in one story board that makes me feel depressed on a daily basis…big envy!  From a pictorial point of view, the pinned images allows you to challenge your creativity and your blog’s pictorial content – composition, still life, lighting, props, location, atmosphere, and so on.  With these elements, it will improve your photography. I am still learning.

I don’t normally do press days for the blog’s sake, it doesn’t translate well to my blog, the content would often get lost along the way, but I don’t have an objection if that applies above or improvise in my own way that would look fit for purpose.  The MiH Jeans HQ in Shepherds Bush ‘The Studios’ is a great example for their modern and contemporary aesthetic.  Originally built as a Victorian schoolhouse, converted into 7,500 sq.ft. space includes an open plan office space, two showrooms, a kitchen and bar, conference room, photography studio, wash development room, design studio, all under one roof.  Their AW13 press day became a real life Pinterest moment for me, I wanted to pin every corner with a blink of an eye.  The kitchen and bar provided sumptuous finger food (thanks to Shini for being in the pictures), kitchen shelves ladened with potted plants and old British china, sweet scented Narcissus complimented the 1920s florist table made from solid Elmwood (very Instagramable I must say) and rails of AW13 collection stands perfectly against the white wash brick wall, the dot/stripe print silk tails shirt was a winner for me.  I would categorise the showroom or press day as ‘Visual Spectacle’.  Enough said.

One of the things I love the most about my job is having the chance to always meet new artists and creative people, that influence my way of being and make me discover different sides about me. Lately I’m trying to always work with different photographers, to see how each of them see me behind their lens.
This is Nima Benati‘s vision, a super young and talented photographer from Bologna.
This is the first set of the eight we shot together that I share here on the blog: enjoy and let me know what you think about these pictures, that I personally adore.

LIFE AS A PRO WITH CANON

As a part of the short videos I shot for Canon during London FW, I had the honor of interviewing the incredibly talented photographer Clive Booth while he was shooting the House of Holland A/W 2014 Lookbook.
Photography is a huge part of my life and blog, so being able to spend some time with a photographer as talented as Clive and having a chance to see him work and get a few tips, was an amazing experience.

Hope you like the video!

Uganda diary: day 1 and 2

TheBlondeSalad-55036-copia

I came back home: yesterday, after landing at 10 am at Linate I started to suffer from Mal D'Afrique.
The week I spent in Uganda was so emotional and unbelievable: It gave me peace and energy to create and to see some real results.
All the people I met were happy and full of dignity, aware of their problems and with the wish to end some of these dramatic situations.
I've always thought that one of my duties would have been to give some strenght to these people, but I was the one getting so much pragmatism from them. I only had to learn from them.
We all hear about Africa and we all have a different idea of that reality if we haven't seen it with our eyes: money is not enough by itself, a change of habits in their society is needed. This is the goal of Millennium Promise: to let these people be self-sufficient in the years, not only giving them food and material items, but teaching them how they can provide them by their own.
The first photo of this post is about life: those are two twin brothers who were one day old, shot at Ruhira health centre, created thanks to this project.
This is only part of the photographic reportage Richi and I created during these years and this time is about photos taken the first two days in Africa, Monday and Tuesday.
After landing in Entebbe and sleeping one night in Kampala, on Monday morning we started the 5 hours jeep trip towards Mbarara, near Ruhira village. The only stop during the drive was the equator line and Millenium Villages Projects office, where bloggers and journalists were given the first "lesson" about all the changes which took place from 2006 until now. Changes we could see with our eyes from the following day: after visiting Nyakamuri school we were welcomed at a local farm where we saw the new way of breeding sheeps and cows and cultivating.
We then were brought to see the new electric system and hydric system: before a couple of years ago It was phantasy to think about having electricity or water at home.
After lunch Josè and I offered to talk on air at the small radio station, expressing ideas about the place and people, and then we were brought to Kabuyanda innovation centre where we had a chance to buy handmade bracelets and necklaces made by Ruhira women whose earnings directly go to this project (finally shopping was for a good cause)
But the places which touched me the most were the two Health Centres: Ruhira smallest one and Kabuyanda biggest one. Two places that made lots of new births possible (before their creations kids were born in the houses with a lot of complications) and the prevention and care of dangerous diseases like malaria and Aids.
If you want to make donations or share news about Millenium Promise you can do it through this link: It's time to change things.

The Reading List…. THEN

In each picture there is a reflection of a state of mind.  Photography does not tolerate a fixed version of the beings we photograph.  In many pictures we want to please. We say, ‘Smile.’ These are photos de politesse, or courtesy shots. But try as one might, the mystery that photography confers on the simplest situations prevails. There is something intangible there, an aura of the unseeable, life beyond the visible. You may call this chance, or randomness, but it is the ability of the film and the lens to capture something beyond the obvious that is, in the end, the glory of the most humble snapshot…

So here is a record of a life and a time, in pictures. The mystery that photographs impose on this record is perhaps why I took them.”

-Alexander Liberman, THEN: Photographs 1925- 1995

Black and white off duty

On Monday afternoon, after the second part of the shooting for my capsule collection for Yamamay (I will soon give you all the news about it and the release dates), shot by Walter Capelli (the first part was shot by Giovanni Gastel) I also posed for some black and white portraits, that of course I couldn't avoid sharing with you on the blog.
Today Milan fashionweek officially starts: among the other things I'm gonna attend Gucci and Alberta Ferretti fashionshow (that will be live on The Blonde Salad), and I still have no idea about what to wear, I'm always a last-minute decisions fan :)

In the Pit…..Bruno Rinaldi, Milan

In the Pit…..Bruno Rinaldi, Milan

Bruno has been shooting fashion week for over 40 years and only three years ago switched to a digital camera.  In a media world that seems to be increasingly focused on bringing uninteresting or unwanted news and images to you faster than you may want or need, Bruno is that throwback guy. He actually takes his time fine tuning his runway shots– he produces a sophisticated image rather than spewing out junk.  I love how, regardless of being told that things need to be faster, faster, faster, some people can still make a living on refined, quality images.

Pinspire

Does it happen to you as well to follow a lot of blogs, websites and tumblr pages looking for inspirational photos? And does It happen to you as well to have loads of folders on the desktop, so full that each time you'd like to share one pic you saved weeks ago It looks impossible to find it? Well, you're in my same situation :)
I found a possible solution some days ago: PINSPIRE (available in different languages for each country): Pinspire is a social network based on photosharing. When you surf the net and you find a photo you really like you can keep it "pinning" it and putting in one of our personal albums. In this way our Pinspire profile will collect all our passions and interests.
This morning I created my first album, of course dedicated to shoes :)
At this link you can find my new profile and here you can find the italian fanpage for Pinspire, but there is one available for each country, so you can find yours :)
Let me know If any of you already uses it and If you find it interesting!

Wednesday photoshoots

TheBlondeSalad-13285-copia

After the Glamour Italy photoshoot which will be out in February yesterday I also took part in another wonderful shooting, whose photographer was Giovanni Gastel, who, at the end, shot me this portrait. I hate being so mysterious, but at the moment I really can't tell you more about it, so, as a "tradition" I leave you with this makeup photos, since I'm so bad at doing my own makeup :)
P.S: The pink feather scarf is from the premiere of the musical "Priscilla" that I attended yesterday night with Angie and Luca: I suggest it to all of you!

Welcome to The Travel Passion

6299039286_fbcc42a0d0_z

I inherited most of my passions from my mum: the ones we have in common are fashion, trips and photography. Some weeks ago I convinced my mum, who already used to upload her reportage on flickr to open a travel blog with all the photos she takes: here for you The Travel Passion. Say hello to her :D
Good luck mum, welcome to the blogging world!

Kawaii!

TheBlondeSalad-6225

Among Tokyo beauties I found, thanks to a friend, some places with camera machines to shoot photos to print or to share by mobile, a real must among japanese teenagers... Since Carolina and I found out we could shoot with special effects (among them the alien eyes are the best) we can't avoid stopping there... Of course we made everything look even more strange thanks to Shu Uemura fake eyelashes :) Kawaii!

Hermes photographs Kellys good enough to eat to celebrate its Kelly Picnic Bag

Photos via Hermes

We’ve all heard the phrase “good enough to eat” used to describe a whole range of visually delectable non-edibles, but it looks as though Hermes has taken the words to heart in celebration of its new Hermes Kelly Picnic Bag; the brand put together homages to the icnonic Kelly bag made out of all the foods you’d need for a proper outdoor meal.

As you might have quessed, the new Kelly Picnic is made out of the familiar woven wicker of a traditional picnic basket, only topped with a barenia leather flap and Kelly closure for that special Hermes touch. You can see it and the rest of the food Kellys after the jump, but considering the scorching heat that New York City endured this weekend, the oranges above are the most enticing of the bunch to me.

Pop Up In Pop Up – ‘West Side Rendevouz’ Book Launch, London

Whenever you see a crowd gathering on the walkway in an otherwise deserted London street, there’s either the local pub or – an opening party. Such it was the case last week, when on-appointment-only project store LN-CC celebrated two exciting new but temporary showcases.

In conjunction with Juswax Pop-Up-Store opening within the store, there was a private view of a new exhibition, succeeding the one by Richie Culver, featuring Japanese photographer Katsu Naito and West Side Rendezvous book launch.

Exhibition of a collection of photographs by Katsu Naito, documenting the transvestite and transexual street-walkers of New York's Meatpacking District in the early 1990s.

Juswax‘s Mark Seven is one of the most highly regarded DJs in leftfield dance music today. Mark will be operating a Pop-Up version of his Juswax record store in the LN-CC library for four weeks, selling a rare, hand-picked selection of influential and seminal records found on his trans-Atlantic digging trips. This collaboration follows the sell out success of Mark Seven’s previous release with LN-CC, the Salute 2 mix CD and T-shirt.

'The area has a distinguished scent, a meaty, bloody funny smell…A lot of garbage on the street...Used condoms on the street. My camera became a kind of license to be there, without it, I could not find a place for me.' - Katsu Naito

Photographer Katsu  has lived in New York since 1983.  In it’s heyday, New York’s 150 year old Gansevoort Market, also known as the Meatpacking District, was home to over 200 meat suppliers, processers and distributors who serviced the city of New York. Being situated close to the Hudson river, meant that it had always felt a very transient place.

The hip crowd

By the 1970’s, the district had lost over half of it’s traditional businesses and was sparsely populated, it became a playground for after-hours activity and home to dozens of private members sex and S&M clubs. These night clubs were predominantly un-licensed members only establishments, and were arenas were gay men could dance together without fear of police harassment, even though many of them were mafia owned or controlled by NYPD protection rackets. Clubs such as: The Anvil, Mineshaft, Hellfire Club, Alice In Wonderland, Jay’s Hangout, Mars, Assterisk, Cell Block, 12 West, The Zoo, and The Hog Pit gained particular notoriety. They were a hybrid of the un-conventional ‘rent party‘ or house parties that were being held in other parts of New York City.

...the beautiful people

During the early 90’s, when Katsu was photographing the area, clubs such as The Clit Club, Meat and Jackie 60 were flying the flag for the clubs that had come before them and Meatpacking was still at the centre of underground New York nightlife. This created the permissive backdrop that allowed club kids, streetwalkers and hustlers to operate freely in the area. Neal Porter, a longtime West side resident says of Meatpacking: ‘I remember this as an outlaw neighborhood, a working neighborhood on the edge.

...the East enders

Katsu mostly encountered and documented his subjects in the early afternoon, when the remaining slaughterhouses and taxi repair garages had traditionally closed their daily business, leaving the blood stained and rubbish strewn streets available for other kinds of trade, notably drug dealing and prostitution. His B/W photographs, capture the light drawing out of the afternoon sky and there is a noticeable lack of industrious activity around his encounters. Many of the subjects stand at the edge of the elongated shadows created by the shuttered buildings.

the philosopher

The 45 images, largely portraits, intimately capture the unexpected beauty of the subject’s day-to-day lives. Naito does not pass judgement, rather observes, and it is evident that he is trusted by his subjects. Street-walkers, Club Kids and passers by, of all races, and backgrounds, each with a different story to tell, are photographed in their immediate environment, the empty streets of ‘West Side‘ New York.

...the Swiss connection

Naito currently works alongside Takeshi Ohfuchi, at the clothing brand Post Overalls.

The exhibition ‘West Side Rendezvous’ was first exhibited in October 2010 by Nepenthes Gallery in Hell’s Kitchen of New York, and then moved to the Nepenthes Gallery in Tokyo at the beginning of 2011. Now, go see it on 18 Shaklewell Lane in Dalston and enjoy the beautiful premises of LN-CC.

...even Japan. We were all there.
