My Essentials / Valentina

valentina-di-pinto

Here are Valentina Di Pinto‘s essentials who is a Fashion Editor for Glamour Italy and whose style I just love, and whose humor (yes, it’s my favorite personality trait a person can have) and haircut I secretly dream of stealing.

My Top: my essential is a leather t-shirt from COS. When it’s really cold it is better to wear something under or over it and if it’s hot …it’s better to stay in the shade!

My Bottom: Very, very thin leather pants from H&M, a leather ’50′s skirt by Salvatore Ferragamo and oversized leather pants by Au Jour Le Jour. I’m not kidding– I’m in a leather mood!

My Jeans: Black or grey are the essentials! I usually don’t spend too much money on them because I love to change it up a lot, so jeans from H&M.

My Evening: Transparent, transparent and even more transparent…from Acne to Valentino, whatever the fabric, it has to be soft and chic. Transparency + transparency = covered!

My Intimates: In contrast with the clothes: really colorful with dark clothes and skin tones with prints from American Apparel.

My Coat: My last buys are both bicolor: black and beige. One really grungy style from Hache and one vintage from Kamanta, in double face materials. Really aristocratic.

My Bag: Like almost every season….. a new clutch bag from Marni! But a clutch is usually not enough for everyday life, so a really cool bucket bag is the right answer. From Marni too.

My Shoes: Flat or really high, nothing in the middle! The essential this season is a chain on them. Like the shinning ones from Stella McCartney or the black & white one from Etro.

My Accessories: I’m becoming addict for necklaces; I’ve never worn them before! Lizzie Fortunato and Leda Otto are essentials for me.

My Watch: It’s one of my favorite pieces, always. My essential is a vintage one from Vacheron Constantin that my grandfather gave to my father and my father gave to me.

My Glasses: RetroSUPERfuture, they are my must! I love to wear the men’s version, they’re bigger on my face!

My Scent: Like a lot of things in my style: sunglasses, jacket, and watch; my perfume also comes from a male world. For ten years, Intense by Costume National is my second skin.

My Brunette: My hair chooses for me. They have a different life, really far away from me. They wake up when they want and they don’t care about what I like.

My Lip: Coral color it’s my must, especially one from YSL.

My Skin: Good cream, like Kiehl’s oil-free lotion, and not too much make up. Sometimes it’s not enough, but a nice smile balances everything.

My Inspiration: Any woman with a story can be an inspiration. Peggy Moffitt, Monica Vitti, Lauren Bacall, Mia Farrow, Julianne Moore and more.

Valentine’s Day Gift Guide: Handbags that say “I love you”

Valentine’s Day! If my informal research is any indication, you probably think of it as either your favorite holiday or the worst day of the year, but no matter which you choose, it still comes around once a year, every year. And if you’re in a relationship, that means that you still have to find ways to gently guide your significant other toward the right kind of Valentine’s-appropriate gift. We have a few ideas, obviously, and they’re all shaped like handbags.

This Valentine’s Day Gift Guide is our first of two, and it’s for the partner that wants to hit this Valentine’s Day out of the proverbial park (or who simply has an enviably large discretionary budget and wants to spend it on you). From $270 to $2595, we’ve got plenty of red and pink bags that make great gifts and that will remind you of a very happy V-Day every time you use them.

Fill in the Blank: The Valentino Rockstud Panther Print Calf Hair Tote is…

I’ve already got Fashion Week on my mind and one of my favorite things about Fashion Week is bag stalking. Come February, editors, buyers, and miscellaneous cool people alike will be hitting Lincoln Center both wearing and carrying their finest.

I have plenty of handbags in my arsenal, but sometimes an oddly different bag stands out and grabs my attention. This is precisely what this Valentino bag has done to me, lured me in and left me wanting more.

However, I realize not everyone loves the urban jungle feel of this panther-print calf hair tote with serious stud embellishments. Help us out and tell us what you think! Buy via Net-A-Porter for $2,995.

My choices from Monnier Frères

TheBlondeSalad-14120-copia

From last October the luxury online store MONNIER Frères gave me the chance to choose 3 different pieces each month, to keep and wear for my looks. The decision becomes more difficult each month, and I'm sure you can all understand me... My choices this time?

Like all the other times, the first choice was a bag: this time I fell in love with the Holmes & Yang bag by Valextra: sold as an exclusive for Monnier Frères and created by Katie Holmes in collaboration with the brand. I think It is a sophisticated and elegant piece in blue and white leather, and I decided to wear it on Saturday night for my first Christmas party of the season, at Richi's mum house, matching it to a Au Jour Le Jour dress and Arfango shoes. What do you say?

The second choice was a Isabel Marant cachemire scarf, that you saw me wearing in yesterday's post: I adore its simplicity and the navy colour which makes it easy to mix to different tonalties, adding an elegant twist to the look.

My third choice was once again a pair of gloves: this time I chose these Valentino studded ones: I got convinced by the studded detail, must have of the maison, that I've already appreciated on bags from the talented designer and that I can't wait to wear at my wrists :)

From wallets to everyday satchels, if it has scales, we’ve got it covered.

From a bag from The Row that originally retailed in the mid-four figures to a Milly bag that’s been marked down to under $200 (but was still a steal at its original price), here are the bags that we’ve been fawning over since they first debuted, now on sale for your shopping pleasure.

What I chose from Monnier Frères

TheBlondeSalad-7936-copia

From last October (do you remember about the previous post?) the online store Monnier Frères gave me the chance to choose 3 different items each month, to keep and wear for my looks. Everytime the decision moment arrives it's really hard to choose, there are a lot of interesting pieces I'd love to make part of my wardrobe.. Here are my choices :)

The first choice was again a bag, again from Valentino (what can I do? Love his bags): the choice this time was the studded black shopping bag, which caught my attention thanks to its maxi dimensions which make it comfortable for everyday life. The studded detail made me go for it :)

TheBlondeSalad-8072-copia

The second and third choices are from the same designer, Isabel Marant, and you all know how much I like her creations. Here my second choice: the beaded bracelet with an ethnic allure and whose dimensions make it look interesting in different looks. Third choice was the beaded belt from the same line: looks wonderful worn with jeans, but also with black jeans and cream sweater, Isabel Marant never disappoints me :)

TheBlondeSalad-8068-copia

Yesterday I wore the three pieces together, creating a urban look different than usual, in which details make the difference. With the Valentino bag, Isabel Marant belt and bangle I wore the ankle boots from my first collection (fall/winter 2010/2011), black jeans and fur waistocat, both from Seven for all mankind.

Burgundy Barcelona

My latest colour-obsession? Burgundy, that I experimented the last day in Barcelona on Topshop skinny jeans (and wait to see the Theysken's Theory sweater) mixed to leopard ankle boots, black coat with leather sleeves and Valentino bag, but I'll talk "properly" about it on tomorrow's post :) Have a wonderful weekend!

Campari day: the official photos

_campari-copia

Those of you who follow me on Twitter and on Facebook fanpage will remember that on the 27th October I spent a "Campari day" for the release of the new calendar, whose testimonial is the beautiful Milla Jovovich.
Finally here the official photos of the day I spent. It all started in the morning, around 10.30: I had the honour to sit at a roundtable (next to Milla) with some journalists to see as a preview all the 2012 calendar, whose title "It's the end of the world baby" it's an ironic call to the Maya prophecy. In Dimitri Daniloff photos Milla is the main character of different natural cataclysms, which are faced in a positive way to remind us, as she answered to one of the questions "that life always has to be lived at its fullest". During the roundtable I also discovered other curiosities about Milla and the calendar: one of her favourite shot is the one in which her dress becomes a giant wave, and it also was one of the most difficul to shoot. Her passions are family and work, and she feels very blessed about both of them, she collects vintage clothes and she keeps her clothes to give to her daughter when she'll be old enough, especially because her mother couldn't do the same and she thinks these pieces have an important emotional value.
After the roundtable I attended the official press conference, hosted by Paola Maugeri, in which the calendar was officially launched.
At night It was time of the big party at the Campari headquarters, which started with a beautiful red carpet to continue in the biggest room, which became a set with dancers. If you wanna see more photos of my look of the party you can find them here. Thanks a lot to Campari for this lovely experience!

Valentino teaches us the difference between its diffusion and main lines

Valentino Bow Flap Bag, $1695 via Neiman Marcus. RED Valentino Bow Shoulder Bag, $495 via Saks.

The similar aesthetics of the Valentino and RED Valentino handbag lines have always surprised me. Sure, a main line and its little sister should have some things in common, but sharing signatures – like Valentino’s bows, for example – always runs one of two risks. First, the less-expensive bags are too similar to the originals, which could mean that the “affordable” line cannibalizes some of the main line’s sales. Second, the comparison of the two might make the diffusion bags look incredibly cheap or childish, which could hurt sales and undermine the purpose of a diffusion line (to capitalize on the cache of the originals to provide an influx of easy cash.)

In the case of the Valentin Bow Flap Bag and the less expensive RED Valentino Leather Bow Shoulder Bag, we’re dealing with the latter issue. Sit them next to each other, and suddenly one has to wonder why anyone would pay $500 for the less expensive option.

Not that I would pay $1700 for the more expensive bag; they both look like they’re attempting to outkick their coverage (to use a football saying), if you ask me. Drop the regular Valentino bag to $1200 and the RED bag to $249, and we might have a conversation about it. As it is, they’re both a little steep, but particularly the diffusion bag. Some of the RED Valentino styles are beautiful and look much more expensive than they really are, but this is not one of those bags. Buy the Valentino for $1695 via Neiman Marcus or the RED Valentino for $495 via Saks.

Valentino offers up an unexpected evening bag

I don’t mention it much in these parts, but I’m a big, enormous vintage fan. At a certain point, I think I hit a wall with regular shopping – I felt like I had seen everything before it hit stores, so once it was there, I was often underwhelmed and ready for something different. The curse of working in the fashion industry, eh? Which is why so many fashion girls are unrepentant vintage hounds; it’s the final frontier of clothing consumerism, where only those with the best eye will survive.

Vintage handbags still don’t have much of a draw for me because utilitarian leather items tend to degrade a great deal over time, which is where items with a heavy retro influence like the Valentino Laser Cut Patent Evening Bag come in. It’s the kind of thing I’d find in a second-hand shop and dearly love, except his one is brand new and totally pristine.

Sometimes, a traditional box or envelope clutch feels too obvious for a special night out, as does basic black. This little bag is still neutral, which means it can go into your regular rotation for evening looks, but it’s special and details in a way that little leather pouches usually aren’t. The tiny laser-cut flowers are beautiful, and the delicate gold chain strap is the perfect accent, not to mention convenient if you need the use of both your hands. Not only that, but for Valentino, the price is downright reasonable. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $595.

From The Front Row / Valentino

I really loved this collection, everything, the dresses of course, but also the hair, the make up, the jewelry, the lightness of it all and the flat shoes that make it all look sooooo easy.

It’s really so cool to witness what Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri are creating around the Valentino brand. Slowly but surely emerges a new Valentino woman…

And I am already dreaming of that black long dress (third picture) for next summer.

Fashion Week Handbags: Valentino Spring 2012

Images via Vogue.com

Now that shows have officially closed for the season and all the bags have been seen (by us, anyway – we’ve still got some more posts for you guys!), I feel comfortable saying that Spring 2012 is probably going to be a bit of a boring season for accessories, at least compared to what we’ve grown used to recently. That being said, a few major designers who have been struggling to find their voices have stepped it up this season, at least when handbags are concerned.

Valentino Spring 2012 is one such collection; I did a lot of complaining about the brand’s Fall 2011 runway bags, but this group is altogether more refined and well-conceived than previous lines have felt. Some of last season’s elements, including studded hand straps, can be found in these designs, but they’re used in ways that feel more natural and functional. This is the collection that Valentino should have showed last season, but I’m glad they decided to show it at all.

A look inside my closet by The Coveteur

coveteur-garance-dore-1

How about this morning we take a little side trip and not talk about fashion week?

Instead, why don’t we talk about me for change ?

Ahah.

The adorable (no seriously, we loved them) members of the Coveteur team took my apartment by storm for a day in July and shot some of my favorite outfits.

Take a look and tell me if you like having a peek at some of my clothes and accessories…

I think I like these kinds of close-ups so much (the stylists Erin and Steph are great at giving life to still-life. And Jake, the photographer, is so dear as well. And believe me, I’m the worst to take pictures of!!!) that from time to time, when I can, I’ll show you little snippets of some of my recent buys.

Because since that day in July, a few little things have made their way into my wardrobe (Miu Miu?) and if you’d like, I’d be happy as can be to share some of them with you.

A big thank you to The Coveteur!!!

I put some of the photos up here on the blog, but you can see all of them right here at Elle.com.

In Case of Emergency: Bags that double as weapons

Is it just me, or is the world on fire? Rioting, political unrest, pop stars being beaten in the streets of New York. What’s a girl to do, in the face of modern society ripping itself apart at the seams? Arm herself, of course.

I’m not talking about getting a gun or a knife. No, those are dangerous and it takes time to fish one out from the bottom of your bag. I’m talking about getting a handbag that can also be used in self-defense maneuvers of all kinds, so that if the apocalypse should rain down while you’re at the movies, you’ll be prepared to survive in the dystopian hellscape that you encounter when you leave. Or, you know, you can use most of these bags to whack a mugger in the head. But doesn’t the former somehow seem more likely than the latter lately? In all seriousness, though, be safe out there ladies. Particularly our readers in London.

Naturally, we couldn’t have this discussion at all without the Alexander McQueen Knuckle Duster Clutch. This design is the original handbag-as-weapon, or perhaps it would be more accurate to call it a weapon-as-handbag. How you use this one should be obvious. Buy through Neiman Marcus for $2125.

Those pointy bits on the front of the Botkier Flint Hobo are solid metal, and that means that in a pinch, you could cut one off, attach it to the end of a stick, and have yourself a handy shiv (or spear, if the stick is lengthy). Buy through ShopBop for $495.

You may not be able to see it in this picture, but we’re all familiar with the big honkin’ chain that graces every Marc Jacobs Stam. I’ve got one myself, and every time I’ve flown with it, I’ve found myself a little nervous that airport security might wonder why I had such a long, heavy chain. You could stave off an attacker in any number of ways with this thing, including a swift blow to the noggin. Buy through Neiman Marcus for $1350.

If there’s one thing that Alexander Wang’s bags are known for, it’s the sheet of solid, heavy studs that graces the bottoms of many of them. Of all the options in the line, the Alexander Wang Diego Bucket Bag is the best for self defense because of its long strap. Swing it around your head like Wonder Woman with her golden laso for maximum use of the bottom-mounted metal. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $975.

Because the studs on the Valentino Rockstud Satchel are of a different placement and lighter weight than the Wang bag, I’d suggest using this one with the short handles to give a harasser a quick smack directly to the face. And then run away. Quickly. Buy through Saks for $2875.

Ok, so The Row Alligator Backpack doesn’t have any particular qualities that might help you in a fight, but its price tag does indicate that anyone who can afford it can also probably afford a driver and private security. If you’re going to carry around a handbag worth more than most people’s cars, you might want to think about acquiring one or both of those things. The Row insists that the bag is “price on request,” but it’s either $39,000 or $34,000, depending on who you ask.

I take back all (well, most) of the bad things I’ve said about Valentino

Valentino One-of-a-Kind Satchel, $2895 and $1995 via Neiman Marcus

Much has been made by me (not to mention the fashion press at large) over Valentino trying to find its path after the retirement of its namesake and longtime leader. The design team put in place since the transition has made some wonderful pieces, but is also responsible for its share of missteps, many of which we’ve discussed in this space.

But Valentino’s recent couture show, one space where the new designers have struggled mightily, received roundly positive reviews and there are some indications that the brand has righted itself and regained what seemed to have been a lost plot. The Valentino One-of-a-Kind Satchel is one of the best bags I’ve seen from the brand in several seasons.

This design has the precision and maturity that you’d expect from a brand with a venerable history like Valentino, which is significant because many of the brand’s less successful moments have come out of the its recent attempts to appeal to a younger audience. Valentino is never going to be “hip” in the way that The Row is hip, and it would be best for everyone involve if it stopped trying and went back to doing what it does best: Making dramatic, glamourous garments and accessories for women with impeccable taste and considerable budgets. These bags work because that’s exactly what they are, with no shred of doubt or self-consciousness as far as the eye can see.

Valentino One-of-a-Kind Snakeskin Satchel, $2895 via Neiman Marcus

Valentino One-of-a-Kind Leather Satchel, $1995 via Neiman Marcus

Valentino and I? We still get along sometimes.

I’ve heaped a good bit of criticism onto Valentino and its design duo of Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli in the past, and I’m not the only person in the industry who has some questions about the direction of the brand and the aesthetic merit of the pieces it’s turning out. Particularly when you consider that the duo are accessories designers by trade, the bags have been a bit disappointing.

But every now and then, the brand still shows that it knows how to get things done. The Valentino Aphrodite Python Bag is all that it should be – ladylike, luxurious, on-trend and extremely elegant.

This bag builds on the Aphrodite shape that Valentino introduced last season, but with a slightly smaller size and more right angles. The buttery, perfectly beige leather is still there, but this time it’s used to accent navy and beige python that is some of the best of the season’s trend toward snakeskin. Possibly related: I didn’t like very many of Fall 2011′s snakeskin bags, so this is possibly a big compliment, if you put any stock in my personal taste. And if you don’t, it probably doesn’t say much. Either way, this is still a very pretty handbag. Buy through Saks for $2895.

Boxing Day 2009 was the last time I went to Bicester Village (Oxford) with my Prada obsessed former classmate/friend from Canada-HK (a former contestant in Project Runway Canada), I can’t remember what he bought but he he bought loads with bags of bags of bags of items from Ralph Lauren, Burberry, Gucci to Prada, ‘I love it here Kit, you won’t be able to find any old season stock bargains in Hong Kong’ ummmm, no comment.

Last week Shini and I had the pleasure to visit Bicester Village as guests of Chic Outlet Shopping (thank you Laura), we were hoping to snatch up some bargains in Reiss which turned out all the sizes in 8s and 10s were gone and we resulted to stray somewhere else…*humph*.  There were some pretty nifty stocks particularly at Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Marni, Ralph Lauren, Cath Kidson, Mulberry, Burberry a like….very dangerous for my wallet, quick hide my Amex card.

004

Colourful print waistcoat – MARNI.

003

Embellished collar – MARNI

002

Satin flatform shoe – MARNI

006

Florals stitched dress – MULBERRY

007

Pony skin, leopard print ballet shoe – MULBERRY

009

Pastel coloured loafters – CHURCH’S

008

Paster coloured suede brogues – CHURCH’S

010

Gorgeous lace dress and silk suit jacket – VALENTINO

011

A nifty lobster like cuff – VALENTINO

I didn’t leave the village without purchasing these little beauties, a receipt envelope wallet (£31) and heart shaped coin purse (£56) from Mulberry, both purchased with a gift card and VIP discount of 10%, to make you feel better I paid about £56 in total…blehhhh.

Save, Spend, Splurge: Flowered Clutches

For better or for worse, spring and summer mean that it’s time for outdoor events. I have weather-sensitive hair, so I’d generally rather be indoors, but a good garden party, picnic or scenic outdoor wedding can win over even this lover of airconditioning. And naturally, after my hair, my first concern is my handbag. For warm weather, what could be better than some soft, season-appropriate flowers?

We know that no everyone is on the same budget, so we’ve picked three options – the Expressions NYC Rose Frame Clutch, 3.1 Phillip Lim Cameron Flower Clutch and Valentino Floral Applique Satin Clutch – at three different price points, all of which would go over well at an outdoor evening event in the next couple months.

Steal:

Expressions NYC Rose Frame Clutch, $48 via Nordstrom

If you don’t attend many evening events or have much use for clutches, this is the way to go. The unfinished edges give this evening bag a touch of Lanvin glamour, and it’s small enough to gloss over the fact that it’s made of synthetics.

Spend:

3.1 Phillip Lim Cameron Flower Clutch, $475 via Barneys

If flowers generally aren’t your thing or you prefer darker colors, 3.1 Phillip Lim does a very nice contemporary take on the traditional floral clutch. Because of the dark hue, you can use this one year-round.

Splurge

Valentino Floral Applique Satin Clutch, $2495 via Net-a-Porter

Of course we couldn’t do a post about flowered bags without Valentino. If you’re looking for something frilly and floral, this clutch is the ultimate, and it has the ultimate price to go with it.

Valentino goes for the gold with sleek crocodile

The Valentino Va Va Voom Crocodile Shoulder Bag, $11,275 via Net-a-Porter

If fashion seasons were like the Olympics, you could call Fall 2011 the Exotic Games – everywhere you look, brands are coming out with crocodile and snakeskin bags, seemingly each a little more drool-worthy than the last. Because trends are rarely penned in to a single cycle, though, plenty of reptilian delights have turned up in spring’s collections as well, including from brands that aren’t necessarily known for their work with exotics. That would be the case with the Valentino Va Va Voom Crocodile Shoulder Bag; Valentino produces exotic bags here and there but hasn’t made it a brand trademark, although that hasn’t stopped the company’s designers from getting in on the fun.

I’ve been a bit suspicious of this bag since the Valentino Spring 2011 runway show back in September of last year, and I still don’t entirely understand the little studded hand slot, what purpose it serves on a shoulder bag or why, exactly, anyone would ever be compelled to stick her hand in it. Aside from that, though, this simple, straightforward design is pretty nicer, particularly in dark-chocolate crocodile. The non-exotic details are nice on this bag as well, particularly the delicate metal handle attachments that adorn the top. But for five figures, the bag should be perfect, and this one isn’t quite there. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $11,275.

Do you know what day it is? Of course you do, it’s Royal Wedding day! The ceremony started at 6 a.m. but your mimosa hangover will surely last into the afternoon, so while you contemplate why you got up before dawn to watch two strangers get married in another country (Go ahead, guess who among us doesn’t have Royal Wedding fever! But that’s ok, Megs has enough for both of us.), we thought you might also like to contemplate some pretty, sparkly, too-small-to-be-functional wedding handbags.

Wedding bags don’t have the rarified spot in bridal lore that wedding shoes enjoy (and for a rundown of those, check out yesterday’s feature from TalkShoes), but that doesn’t mean that they’re any less important for those of us who love purses above all other things in fashion. Plus, bags have the special distinction of being able to be worn by the bride or the guests, so long as those attending don’t choose all-white ensembles to go with their special little clutches. Our picks for the best, after the jump.

Get your springtime on with Valentino

Valentino plies its floral, verdant trade year-round, but its spring bags are always the most fun, not to mention the most season-appropriate. Really, the only month out of the year where I’m so excited for warm weather that I’d consider carrying a bag that’s literally covered in flowers is April, which makes today the Valentino Fany Woven Flower Tote‘s lucky day.

The urge to break out the linen pants and tank tops is very strong at the moment, which makes this tote look all the more appropriate. By the time that the truly hot and sticky weather of summer rolls around, I’m sure I’ll be sick of flowers and girlishness in their entireties and just want someone to turn on the air conditioner and leave me alone. For now, though, I’d love to take a stroll through a park with this tote on my arm.

This bag requires the sort of full-skirted dress and delicately heeled shoes that I don’t really have in my closet, but that doesn’t stop me from imagining myself as an Upper East Side lady who lunches in an Oscar de la Renta frock and a pair of Vivier sandals, carrying this bag gingerly in the crook of my arm. In real life, I have black and purple hair and wear a lot of animal print, so this is a bag that I’d skip, but it’s fun imagining myself as one of those women nonetheless. Buy through Neiman Marcus for $2795.
